The New BCS Formula

CraytonNov 2, 2008

After USC was passed over for the National Championship in 2003 the BCS overhauled and simplified its formula. This stopped much double counting. Strength of schedule including victories against better teams were dropped as computers already factored these in.

Applying the revised formula to the first 6 years of the BCS yields the following results, top 4 given along with original rank. The AP poll is used as it was up through 2004. The Computer poll is determined using the official computers for each year, removing the highest and lowest rank. The exception is 1999 when only 3 computers were used. The Computer rating for this year was kept as original.

The most notable results are the changed title game participants in 2001 and 2003. The second place team in 2000 is still a really close call. Also* point results of the Coaches poll at the end of the 2001 season were unobtainable but this did not change overall rank.
