CM Punk´s Promo Against Vince McMahon and the WWE: A Turning Point for WWE

Maximilian SpechtJun 28, 2011

Hello fellow Bleachers, this is my first article for this site. I waited quite some time for a topic where I really wanted to share my thoughts with you and here it is. A lot has been written and said about CM Punk´s epic promo last night, but I still hope I can add something to the discussion. I hope you´ll enjoy my effort. Feel free to comment.

CM Punk has truly shocked the whole wrestling world. Since watching Raw, I have been checking Twitter, Bleacher Report and the whole web almost every 10 minutes and I am pretty sure I am not the only one. I won´t give you another summary of what happened, as you probably all know about CM Punk´s incredible and unexpected bashing of Vince McMahon, The Rock, Hogan and the whole WWE Universe. But when I watched one of the best promos in the history of WWE, I almost immediately thought:

This is a turning point for WWE.

We all waited a long, long time for a moment like this promo yesterday. Listen, I do not want to assail WWE for everything they have done in the last years, but I do think that you would agree to some extend when I say: WWE has become more and more boring. WWE bored us with SuperCena and WonderOrton, bored us with predictable story lines and stale gimmicks and frustrated us with the constant burying of talented guys Like Zack Ryder, Drew McIntyre and others. Something had to happen.

 And then came Punk.

We all believed he would more or less silently exit the company and one day ago, only a few would have expected he could have a real chance to beat Cena at MITB. But this promo yesterday changes everything. All of a sudden and only with his talking, CM Punk not only created a buzz unlike any other in recent memory, but he also created a moment you could describe as "instantly classic."

As we all know, there are those rare moments in wrestling that will stay in our memory forever, like Austin refusing to give up to the Sharpshooter, Mick Foley being smashed through a cell or Shawn Michaels last match. In a few years, when we look back, this promo could very well be one of those moments.

No one ever thought cutting a promo like this would be possible in modern WWE. In six minutes, he gave us something every wrestling fan longed for for years now. He shocked us, he surprised us, he made us discuss and he made every show until MITB and the PPV a must-see. I honestly can´t tell when I have been that excited about a storyline the last time (let's all just hope this shoot was indeed worked). And, more importantly, he said nothing but the truth. He mentioned everything what makes a lot of us sick when we think about WWE right now. He gave us something to relate to. Only few moments in history have created emotions like this.

Make no mistake, Vince McMahon, this is your biggest chance in years now.

CM Punk really could become the messiah he wanted to be with the SES. But now, his role is far, far bigger. He has the talent, he has the abilities and he has the charisma to be at the very top of the company. He could be the first one to pose a real, legitimate threat to Cena and his superman gimmick, he could be the one who finally forces Cena to raise his game (which I´m sure Cena is capable of). Hell, his straight-edge-style even fits to the PG-concept. If WWE does not drop the ball again, one of the hottest feuds ever awaits us, a feud with endless possibilities, a feud that will make us watch and enjoy every second of it.

But this could also turn out to be one of the most fatal letdowns ever.

If this angle ends with Cena winning clean at MITB and Punk leaving the company for indefinite time, I would feel like being slapped in the face by Vince McMahon himself. I would know that WWE does not care about a big part of their fans and that they have no interest in changing anything significant within the next years. I would seriously consider stop watching WWE and I know that a lot of fans would agree with me.

Let´s just hope that CM Punk really is the Second City Saviour.
