
Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum Results: Live Main Card Play-by-Play
The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix continues tonight as two more semifinalists will be determined. Also, the next top contender in the Strikeforce lightweight division could be determined in a bout between K.J. Noons and Jorge Masvidal.
A heavyweight bout between Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers will determine the semifinal opponent for Sergei Kharitonov, who defeated Andrei Arlovski in the first round of the tournament. Additionally, the winner of a highly anticipated rematch between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum will face Antonio Silva later this year.

Valentijn Overeem vs. Chad Griggs

Round 1
Griggs ducks a head kick early on, presses Overeem to the fence and takes the fight to the ground with a lateral drop.
From the half guard, Griggs blasts Overeem with ground-and pound. Overeem rolls to his knees and covers up before the referee before tapping due to strikes.
Griggs defeats Overeem by submission (strikes) at 2:08 of the first round.
According to Compustrike, Griggs landed 28 ground strikes in 1:06 of ground time.
For the third time in his career, Overeem tapped due to strikes. Griggs extends his solid record to 11-1 and looks ready for a step up in competition, possibly against the winner of the next fight on this card.
Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson

Round 1
Cormier is scoring with inside leg kicks early. Cormier lands a hook to the body and follows it up with a right hand to the head.
Cormier is picking Monson apart with high-low combinations. A straight right to the body of Monson is followed with a hard left hook to the head.
Monson didn't land a significant strike in the first round. Cormier looks strong on his feet, and he might elect to keep the fight standing.

Round 2
Monson swings wildly and falls to the ground, trying to bait Cormier into his guard. Cormier waits for Monson to stand, though.
Monson seems to be having more success on his feet this round as he is much more aggressive and landing with his overhand right.
Cormier clinches and lands an uppercut. Monson is looking to lead with the jab, but Cormier counters him twice with left hooks.
Cormier clinches against the fence and lands a big shot to the body as the fighters separate. Monson is looking tired and defeated as the round comes to an end.

Round 3
Cormier is continuing to land his left hook at a high percentage. A right hand backs Monson up and another left hook buckles him.
Monson appears to have recovered, but it doesn't look like he has anything left in the tank at this point. A straight right from Cormier forces a desperation shot from Monson.
Cormier defends easily and waits for Monson to stand. Cormier tosses Monson to the ground with less than a minute remaining, but has no interest in following his opponent to the canvas.
Cormier lands a head kick with 20 seconds left, but Monson's chin was rock solid in this fight.

Cormier defeats Monson by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
According to Compustrike, Cormier landed 96 power strikes to 11 from Monson.
Cormier is now 8-0 in his MMA career. Mix Cormier's improving striking game with his outstanding wrestling background and you have a dangerous prospect in the heavyweight division.
K.J. Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal

Round 1
Masvidal lands an uppercut after attempting a flying knee. Noons is using his boxing background to his advantage early, scoring to the body by changing levels frequently.
Masvidal lands a knee from the clinch and then a flying knee lands on the button. Masvidal takes Noons down with a double leg. Noons jumps on a kimura attempt, but he is looking for the referee to stand the fight up more than anything.
Noons stands and Masvidal lands a knee to the body. Masvidal lands another knee from the clinch that cuts Noons. Masvidal is out-boxing Noons now, which spells rouble for Noons in this fight.
Masvidal blasts Noons with a head kick and Noons barely survives the round.
B/R scores the round 10-8 Masvidal.
Round 2
Noons is mixing in leg kicks with his combinations now. Masvidal secures a double leg takedown, though. However, Noons stands quickly and puts together a nice combination.
Masvidal runs the pipe and puts Noons down again with a single leg. Noons wall walks and escapes without taking much damage on the ground.
Noons lands a knee, but Masvidal returns with an overhand right. Masvidal shoots in for another single leg, but Noons uses the cage to defend with one minute left in the round.
Eventually, Masvidal gets the fight to the ground again, but Noons reverses position with 30 seconds remaining. Masvidal escapes and backs Noons up with a knee.

Round 3
Noons is pressing forward, as he will need to do if he wants to mount a comeback in this fight.
Just as Noons finally looks to be on his way to taking a round on the scorecards, Masvidal secures two takedowns within the final two minutes.
Noons looks for a kneebar as the fight comes to an end, but he is unsuccessful.

Masvidal defeats Noons by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
According to Compustrike, Masvidal out-landed Noons 36 to 4 on the ground.
Masvidal has been dominant in hsi first two Strikeforce appearances, which has been enough to earn him a title shot against Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez.
Josh Barnett vs. Brett Rogers

Round 1
Rogers throws a leg kick and Barnett attempts to catch the kick. He misses the leg, but shoots in for a double leg and slams Rogers to the canvas.
Barnett moves to full mount with under three minutes remaining in the round. Barnett postures up and rains down punches.
Rogers shakes Barnett out of full mount by pushing off of the cage, but Barnett transitions right back into the dominant position.
B/R scores the round 10-9 Barnett.
Round 2
Barnett lands a left hook. Rogers secures a body lock, but Barnett uses a hip toss to wind up right back in full mount.
Barnett secures a side choke and forces the tap from Rogers.
Barnett defeats Rogers by submission (side choke) at 1:17 of the second round.
According to Compustrike, Barnett landed 44 total strikes to 4 from Rogers.
Barnett will now meet Sergei Kharitonov in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum

Round 1
Werdum starts the action with a head kick. Werdum shoots in for a double leg, but Overeem stuffs it easily and waits for his opponent to stand.
Werdum is desperate to take the fight to the ground, but Overeem is stuffing Werdum's double legs with ease. Overeem lands a knee to the body.
Werdum pulls guard twice, but Overeem backs out of it both times. Werdum clinches and is tossed to the ground by Overeem.
Overeem lands a left hook and Werdum tries to lure Overeem to the ground. Overeem throws Werdum to the ground and Werdum pleads to Overeem to join him.
Werdum pulls guard at the end of the round, but doesn't have enough time to make anything happen.
B/R scores the round 10-9 Overeem.
Round 2
Both fighters trade knees to the body. Werdum presses forward and Overeem throws him to the ground. Werdum catches a kick and takes Overeem briefly.
Werdum clinches and lands two big knees. Overeem takes Werdum down, but lets the Brazilian stand. Werdum is slow to get up.
Overeem lands two big left hooks and Werdum pulls guard yet again. Overeem stands and begins teeing off on Werdum.
Werdum pulls the fight to the ground again, though. Werdum throws his legs up, but Overeem backs out of the guard.
Overeem hurts Werdum with a knee and then lands another before being pulled into Werdum's guard. Werdum has a minute to work off of his back, but doesn't do anything with it.

Round 3
Werdum lands a knee and looks aggressive to starts the round. Werdum gets hit with a left hook and pulls guard with four minutes left in the fight.
Werdum stands and tags Overeem with a straight right. Werdum drops down for a leg, but is running out of time with two minutes remaining.
One minute left and it looks like Overeem will move onto the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Overeem lands a hard knee and Werdum nearly locks up a leg lock at the final bell rings, but it is too little too late.

Overeem defeats Werdum by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).
According to Compustrike, Overeem landed 42 power strikes to 16 for Werdum.
