Liverpool FC: High Flying Form Continues for Luis Suarez and Dirk Kuyt

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 9, 2011

Two of Liverpool's top performers from the last half of the 2010-11 English Premier League season faced off on opposite sides of the ball Wednesday night. In a rematch of last summer's World Cup Semi Final, Luis Suarez's Uruguayan national side played host to Dirk Kuyt and the Holland National team in Montevideo, Uruguay for the second-to-last friendly the Dutch will face before they start 2012 European Championship qualifying rounds again in September.

It was a hard-fought battle for the first 80 minutes but the last ten would prove to be more exciting. Luis Suarez finally broke the deadlock on the 82nd minute. Edinson Cavani squared the ball to Suarez in the box, and El Pistelero slotted it home from 12 yards out. It looked as though all they had to do was hold of the Oranje for another few minutes. However, the drama was far from over.

Diego Godin nearly made it 2-0 for the home side from a corner as Holland pressed for an equalizer with little time to go.

A last-minute corner kick for the Netherlands was swung into the box, and Dirk Kuyt headed it in for a clutch goal in the dying seconds and brought his team level at last possible chance before being substituted last minute for Eljero Elia, who was rumored as a Liverpool target in January.

Kuyt's goal allowed his team to reach a penalty shoot-out with Suarez's Uruguay, but they would fall 3-2 to the South Americans.

The battle of the Liverpool forwards ended equally on spoils as far as goals but Suarez will have the bragging rights next time the two share the training pitch at Melwood.

It is great to see that the two continue to keep their form, and that shows great signs for next season, as they will both be key to Liverpool's attack and aspirations come August when the English Premier League picks back up.

They already have one new teammate to greet when they get home in Jordan Henderson, and it will interesting to see who else will join them over the next two months.
