TUF 13 Finale Results: Can Clay Guida Beat Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard?

Jeffrey McKinneyJun 8, 2011

At The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale, Clay Guida brought himself one step closer to a UFC lightweight title shot by defeating Anthony Pettis.

Guida was able to take Pettis down numerous times, but then had to escape many submission attempts.

Winning the fight now brings to question of how Guida will fair against the two top lightweights in the UFC, Champion Frankie Edgar and number 1 contender Gray Maynard.

All three fighters are good wrestlers. But if Guida is able to get Edgar or Maynard down, would he be able to keep them there?

Edgar is the smallest of the three fighters. But his heart comes second to none. The champ is hard to keep down. Edgar also has the energy to match Guida, and is a more technical striker.

Maynard may not be as technical as Edgar in the stand up game, but he has very heavy hands. He had the champ hurt multiple times in the first round of their second fight.

Guida has never been knocked out. But a bomb from Maynard could change that.

If Guida is able to beat either one of these guys he will have to be extremely scrappy and game plan well. He has been showing good signs of this in his last couple of fights.

As wild as Guida may seem in the octagon, it is all a part of the game plan.

I believe if he can dodge Maynard’s hands and stuff his take downs he’ll stand a chance. Edgar on the other hand is a harder case due to his speed and heart.

My guess is Edgar pulls out a decision.

Although he may not be next in line just yet, it would be interesting to see how Guida stacks up around either of these great fighters.
