Just this past Monday, May 30, the Diva division received a devastating hit, more devastating than Michael Cole going off on how the division is worthless and no one watches the matches. Kharma, as reported in numerous articles has left the show due to pregnancy.
This, after a long build up of vignettes, ring run ins and domination of the division. For my own take on this, you can see my write up at The BOOM Page.
Losing Kharma before she started and a great team like Lay Cool due to the injury of Layla and Michelle McCool taking time off to care for her husband The Undertaker have set the Diva's group back a bit, knocked down, but not out, I believe there can be a plan to save the division.
First, let's look to see what we have to work with on the rosters.
Raw has: Beth Phoenix, The Bellas, Eve, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, Maryse, and Melina as active Divas.
Smackdown has: AJ fresh from NXT, Alicia Fox, Kaitlyn, Natalya, Rosa Mendes and Tamina.
This is a strong group of Divas some with a lot of experience and in ring skill like Phoenix, Gail Kim, Tamina and Natalya. These four represent the technicians of the group with a very strong wrestling background.
Kelly Kelly, Eve, Alicia Fox, The Bellas and Maryse fall under the pretty girl factor, they look good and have moderate skills in the ring.
AJ, Kaitlyn and Rosa are very fresh, while Mendes has been around a while in the WWE, at least a couple of years, she hasn't had any large factors in the WWE.
With this group being so small one thing that needs to happen is removing the factor of Divas being secluded to only one show or the other. No Raw and Smackdown Divas, just WWE Divas, the division needs to be able to travel between both shows.
We then need to establish the protagonists and antagonists, or in wrestling terms our faces and heels. The face team to start would be Eve, Kelly Kelly, AJ, Kaitlyn, Tamina and Beth Phoenix the heels would then consist of The Bellas, Maryse, Melina, Natalya, Alicia and Rosa.
The heels should out number the faces to create that atmosphere of the good guys/girls being outnumbered.
Now, the new factor to bring some life into the division, the BOOM if you will, we bring in a Divas Division Management team. Two men, two women to lead the group and essentially coach the Divas in the division, make matches and be a General Manager but solely for the Divas.
The management team would consist of:
1. Vicki Guerrero: Of course Vickie has to be there, she is somewhat a part of the Diva division already and works well in a management role in the company.
2. The Godfather: But a new modern godfather, nice suits, more swagger and less 'cartoony' pimp. He'd manage the ladies and promote their sexy factor.
3. Trish Stratus: Follow up her run on Tough Enough with this, making her the leader with experience as we've seen on Tough Enough and the counter to Vickie.
4. Santino Marella: The ladies man of the WWE, and former two time Miss Wrestlemania. He'd bring the fun factor to the group, maybe constantly insisting that the Godfather is more of a Don Corleone Godfather and of course his relationships with Tamina and Beth could play a factor.
The division has potential, regardless of those out there who scream for the Indy style wrestling or famous Divas from Japan, this group can do what WWE is meant to do, entertain. When Lita, Trish, Miss Jackie and Ivory were in the ring we cared about the division because it had character, it had a story.
Building the story and the characters of these women will change everything and breaking away from the same 'mean girl' stories that have been going on for the past several years would revitalize a group that has a lot of beauty and skill.
In regards to who would be champion, I feel it's time for Kelly Kelly to be on top (yep, that's what I said.) She started as the extreme dancing girl on ECW and has been with the company for quite some time, she has the popularity in pop culture, being in the Maxim 100 and the crowd always loves her. I thought for sure she was going to win at the ppv and have that lead into a feud with Kharma but it looks like that has changed.
Hopefully, the last title shot she had will not be her last shot at the belt with The Bellas.
Building the characters, developing the story, even if its just ten to fifteen minutes each show each week would make a huge difference. No more just having them come out and have a random match, lets see some backstage stuff, let's see some locker room arguments, it worked before it can work again.
WWE if you need me, you know where to find me, I'd be happy to start writing some scripts for you, give a call. BOOM
This will be my first in a series of Diva articles in the month of June here on Bleacher Report and on my own site www.theboompage.com
