"Macho Man" Randy Savage: The Orginal Mainstream Wrestler

I graduated from college this morning and heard the song "Pomp and Circumstance" multiple times today. It could not have prepared me for Randy Savage's death.

"Pomp and Circumstance" was known to the world as the theme song of the "Macho Man". Never has one song meant so much joy and despair in the same day for me.

It's difficult to attach one memory to Savage. He was certainly one of those that belong in conversation for a Mount Rushmore of wrestling. Savage often had his star power watered down along the likes of Hulk Hogan, but Savage had just as much recognition with the mainstream crowd as The Hulkster ever did.

Savage always wore over the top clothing and had insane promos that rivaled The Ultimate Warrior's. Savage was a two-time WWF Champion and had the third-longest Intercontinental Championship reign all-time of 414 days. His two world title reigns in WWE rank him ninth all-time in total days with the promotion's main title.

Savage will be remembered to me as a mainstream guy more so than Hulk Hogan ever was. Savage is widely known as the spokesman for Slim Jim, who featured him on commercials and promotions for many years.

To this day, he is still associated with the beef jerky. He is also known for appearing in the original Spider-man movie as "Bonesaw McGraw", who wrestled Peter Parker in a match. While also doing many TV appearances, Savage even made a rap album in 2003.
