Floyd Mayweather Targets Miguel Cotto, Victor Ortiz for Tune-Up Fight

Leo ReyesMay 4, 2011

Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer of unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr, says his nephew is targeting either Miguel Cotto or newly-crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz for his tune up fight within the year.

The outspoken trainer of the undefeated boxer told Chris Robinson, who writes for Boxingscene and Examiner.com, he believes Floyd will return to the ring this year.

"He will. Yeah, he will come back this year," Roger Mayweather said. "I don't know when, probably by end of summer it will be his next fight. He's got a deal with, what's his name, Jim Jones, Jerry Jones? I mean, he's planning on resuming his career."

Floyd's uncle was referring to Jerry Jones, the owner of the huge Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the venue of Manny Pacquiao's last two fights with Josua Clottey and Antonio Margarito.

Pacquaio's last two fights at Cowboys Stadium were arranged by Top Rank's Bob Arum, who is a friend of Jerry Jones.

A few months a go Jerry Jones was seen with the unbeaten boxer at the Cowboys Stadium, where he also met with Bob Arum.

"I think it's going to be an outstanding crowd for him to go in there and fill that stadium up, see how many people he can draw," Roger Mayweather said. "But that's going to make it that much better to draw it to the fight for Pacquiao."

Miguel Cotto has just won over Ricardo Mayorga via TKO and was reported to have agreed to face Antonio Margarito before the end of the year.

A fight with Cotto may be far fetched as the Puerto Rican idol is under Top Rank Promotions, whose owner, Arum, has a long-standing feud with Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather's promoter.

Boxing insiders say a more viable opponent would be Victor Ortiz, who is under Golden Boy Promotions, the same company that promotes Mayweather.

Ortiz became an overnight boxing sensation when he ran away with an upset victory over highly-rated Andre Berto last April 16.
