Floyd Mayweather Dropped from Ring Magazine P4P Rankings, Miguel Cotto Enters

Justin TateMay 3, 2011

Ring Magazine has just moved Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (41-0) out of their rankings for not fighting in over a year.

As Ring Magazine states:

"

"It is THE RING’s ratings policy to drop rated fighters who have been inactive for one year from the rankings unless they have a bout scheduled or they are in serious negotiations for a fight."

Mayweather's last fight came against Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) on May 1, 2011. Now, Mayweather is fighting for his freedom in court, possibly never entering the ring again.

His domestic violence charges that stem from a confrontation with the mother of his child Sept. 9, 2010 have been delayed yet again to July 29 of this year according to BBC News.

In a very ironic twist, Miguel Cotto entered the pound-for-pound rankings at No. 10 as Mayweather left the No. 2 slot.

Cotto was hailed as the next great  undefeated welterweight back when Mayweather had defeated Hatton. Cotto had just beaten Mosley. Naturally the world wanted to see the two undefeated fighters compete.

Mayweather decided to leave, Cotto had to face the possibly illegally tampered hands of Antonio Margarito, who handed him his first brutal knockout loss instead of the big mega-fight he would've achieved with the elusive Mayweather.

The loss left devastating mental scars on Cotto. Many fans have noted him not being the same fighter, but Cotto has made a nice comeback with assistance from legendary trainer Emanuel Steward.

Cotto's career seems like it may be helped this time by Mayweather's latest departure from boxing instead of hurt like the last time Mayweather left the sport.
