Strikeforce Diaz vs. Daley Results: Live Play-by-Play Slideshow Blog

In its first event under Zuffa ownership, Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley, the organization will feature two title fights. Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz will meet former UFC fighter Paul Daley, while Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will attempt to defend his belt against Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Additionally, the events will feature a fight between two high-profile light heavyweights in Gegard Mousasi and Keith Jardine. Also, Shinya Aoki and Lyle Beerbohm will kick off the main card in an important lightweight bout.

Bleacher Report will be covering the main card with round-by-round commentary and analysis. Play-by-play will begin around 10 pm EST.

Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Robert Peralta

Peralta defeated Takaya by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Brett Albee vs. Virgil Zwicker

Zwicker defeated Albee by technical knockout at 1:46 of the first round.

Joe Duarte vs. Saad Awad

Duarte defeated Awad by submission (arm bar) at 2:45 of the second round.

Herman Terrado vs. AJ Matthews

Terrado defeated Matthews by knockout at 4:16 of the first round.

Rolando Perez vs. Edgar Cardenas

Perez defeated Cardenas by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Casey Ryan vs. Paul Song

Ryan defeated Song by submission (triangle choke) at 1:39 of the first round.

Shinya Aoki vs. Lyle Beerbohm

Round 1

Lyle Beerbohm blocks a left head kick from Shinya Aoki and immediately drives the Japanese fighter into the fence. Aoki trips Beerbohm and looks to take his back. Aoki goes for the rear naked choke and uses it to crank on Beerbohm's neck, which forces the tap.

Aoki defeated Beerbohm by submission (neck crank) at 1:33 of the first round.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine

Round 1

Keith Jardine is light on his feet early on and looking to stay on the outside. Jardine lands a leg kick, but Gegard Mousasi clinches and lands a few good shots to the body. Jardine attempts a single leg takedown and switches to a double leg to finish it. Jardine takes Mousasi's back, but Mousasi maintains hand control and stands.

Jardine takes Mousasi right back down, but the fighters are soon back on their feet. Mousasi lands a right hand that backs Jardine up. Jardine is tired now and Mousasi is taking advantage. Jardine desperately attempts a takedown and gets it.

Mousasi lands an illegal up kick and has a point deducted.   

Bleacher Report scores the round 9-9.

Round 2

Mousasi lands a jab early and just misses on a right hook. Jardine is stuffed on a takedown attempt and Mousasi tries to wrap his arms around his opponents neck. Mousasi scores on multiple outside leg kick and a body kick.  

Mousasi is pressing forward and picking Jardine apart. Another Jardine takedown attempt is stuffed, but a second attempt is successful. Jardine lands an overhand right before Mousasi is able to escape.

Mousasi lands two jabs and a right kick to the body. Jardine takes Mousasi down again, but does nothing with it.

Bleacher Report scores the round 10-9 Mousasi.

Round 3

The round is quickly paused as Jardine takes a shot below the belt.  

On the restart, Jardine attempts another takedown that is stuffed. Mousasi capitalizes on a kick to the body to take the fight to the ground and attempt a guillotine choke.

Jardine fights it off, but ends up on his back again. Mousasi mounts, but Jardine uses the cage to escape and dives right back in for a double leg. The action is stopped yet again, this time for a moutpiece replacement. 

Mousasi lands two hard right hands and takes Jardine down. The round ends with Mousasi on top. 

Bleacher Report scores the round 10-9 Mousasi (29-27 Mousasi).

Mousasi and Jardine fight to a majority draw (29-27 Mousasi, 28-28, 28-28).

Compustrike recorded a 27-4 edge for Mousasi in power strikes landed in round one. Jardine had four takedowns, but inflicted no ground damage

According to Compustrike, Jardine had six takedowns thru two rounds, but only two ground strikes landed and no submission attempts.

According to Compustrike, Mousasi had a 69-12 edge in power strikes landed throughout the fight.  Mousasi landed 51 percent of his arm strikes.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri

Round 1

Tatsuya Kawajiri misses on a left hook and Gilbert Melendez cracks him with a right. Melendez catches a kick and takes Kawajiri down before letting him up. Melendez lands multiple knees and Kawajiri is hurt.  Melendez lands an uppercut, but is putting on the brakes a bit.

Melendez drops Kawajiri with another right hand and finishes him with the newly legalized elbows in Strikeforce.

Melendez defeats Kawajiri by technical knockout at 3:14 of the first round.

According to Compustrike, Melendez had a 45-15 edge in total strikes landed and 38-5 edge in power strikes landed.

Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley

Round 1

Nick Diaz taunting already. Paul Daley lands an inside leg kick. Diaz lands a punch to the body, but Daley is overwhelming him early on. Daley nearly lands a soccer kick. Diaz clinches and is landing nice combinations against the cage. Daley takes Diaz down.

Diaz escapes and lands a straight left. Diaz presses Daley to the cage again and is landing combinations again. Daley lands a knee and both fighters swing wildly.

Daley drops Diaz and is looking to finish the fight with ground-and-pound. Daley allows Diaz to stand.

Diaz lands a nice combination again and Daley is wobbly. Daley falls to the canvas and Diaz finishes the fight with ground-and-pound.

Diaz defeats Daley by technical knockout at 4:55 of the first round. 

It was a crazy back and forth round and both fighters easily could have been finished on multiple occasions.

According to Compustrike, Diaz and Daley combined to land 90 strikes in first round. Diaz had a 54-36 edge in total strikes landed.
