UFC News: Anthony Pettis "Disappointed" in Missed Title Shot

Sal DeRoseMar 20, 2011

Anthony Pettis was the last lightweight champion in the WEC and was promised a shot to unify the WEC and UFC lightweight title. But after a draw between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at the beginning of the year, Pettis has not had the shot at the title.

"I was disappointed because I was promised a shot and after the fact I was still promised the shot, so I was a little disappointed but life goes on," said Pettis in an interview with Fightline.

"I have a new opponent and it's just a little longer wait for me to get my title shot, but it's coming."

Now, instead of fighting for the UFC lightweight belt, Pettis is fighting in a much less prestigious bout against Clay Guida at the TUF 13 Finale.

For his troubles, Pettis received nothing. The UFC hasn't compensated the young star in any way for what has happened to him.

When asked if he even received an apology, Pettis said "No, not at all."

"I didn't get no apology or anything like that, but they have their reasons for making their decisions. We'll see when I fight Clay Guida, if I get taken care of," said Pettis.

Pettis wowed everyone and sent the WEC out with a bang when he used the "Showtime Kick" against the then champion, Ben Henderson, at WEC 53. Pettis basically launched himself off the chain fence at Henderson and sent out a roundhouse kick to the face that made Chuck Norris let out a giant "Oh!"

Now instead of his first big fight at the young age of 23, he faces off against Guida, risking his status as the No. 1 lightweight contender.
