Davis Cup Results: USA, Serbia, Sweden, France, Argentina, Others Win

On Sunday, Davis Cup first round comes to an end as teams wrap up their countries victories. The USA, Serbia, Sweden, Argentina, Spain, Kazakhstan, and Germany move on to the the quarterfinals in July with their wins. 

USA vs. Chile 4-1 

Captain Jim Courier celebrates his first win with his team of Andy Roddick, John Isner, Bob and Mike Bryan. In the first reverse singles rubber, Roddick clinched the results for his team against Paul Capdeville 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-3, in three hours and six minutes.

It was Roddick's 33rd win and 44th single match at the Davis Cup. Isner is responsible for their first loss when he went to five sets against Chilean player Capedeville, but won the dead rubber in three sets on Sunday against Rivera Ara. In the quarterfinals, they will face Spain. 

"I'm proud of us," said Roddick in an interview after his win. "Bob and Mike have put me in the position to clinch 11 times and they should get a lot of the credit. If they don't win they're match then I can't clinch. I'm just happy to have been a part of this team and play at a high enough level to be on this team for this long." 

Serbia vs. India 4-1

To play Sweden in the quarterfinals, Viktor Troicki clinched the win for defending champions Serbia after beating Somdev Devvarman 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, without the help of Novak Djokovic. Janko Tipsarevic had lost to Devvarman in the second rubber and India's team was without their strong asset of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi.  Karan Rastogi fell to Tipsarevic at 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth dead rubber. 

"We are through to the quarterfinals, we know it’s going to be very tough against Sweden and we hope to have our best player Novak Djokovic back for that tie,” said Troicki.

Sweden vs. Russia 3-2

After Sweden had won their first three rubbers sending them to the quarterfinals against Serbia, even though Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Andreev won both of the dead rubbers on Sunday. Russia suffered without strong players Mikhail Youhzny and Nicolay Davydenko. 

Argentina vs. Romania 4-1

Without Juan Martin Del Potro, Argentina moves on to play Kazakhstan. Eduardo Schwank clinched the first reverse singles against Crivoi 7-6. 6-2. 

Spain vs. Belgium 4-1

Opting not to play the fifth dead rubber, Spain won to face the Americans next. Rafael Nadal beat Olivier Rochus 6-4, 6-2. 

Germany vs. Croatia 3-2

For Germany's victory, doubles player Philipp Petzchner took out Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(5) after Phillip Kohlschreiber fell to Marin Cilic in the fourth rubber. Germany faces 2010 finalists France next at home.  

Kazakhstan vs. Czech Republic 3-2

For their first time in Davis Cup's World Group draw, Kazakhstan defeated Czech Republic in the fifth rubber to play Argentina next. Andrey Golubev upset Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2; however, Berdych was clearly exhausted from having to play all three days of the event. Kukushkin sealed his team's fate when he beat Jan Hajek 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 6-0.  

France vs. Austria 3-2

Without top players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Gael Monfils, France secured their place in the QFs. Jeremy Chardy was France's hero after successfully winning the last decisive rubber after Gilles Simon lost in the first reverse singles.
