The Worst Headbutts In Sports
You may love to see them in movies and T.V. shows, but nothing beats a good headbutt in sports.
The physics of a headbutt can be pretty confusing.
Usually the person that initiates his/her head towards the victim knocks them down. But doesn't the aggressor's head have to hurt just as much?
How many times have you seen a devastating headbutt that results in both players laying on the ground in agony?
It's a classic move that has been around since the cavemen were competing with each other for fish and women.
Here is a look at some of the best headbutts in sports.
Head's up!
15. ECW Wrestling
1 of 15Wrestling may be as fake as Kim Kardashian, but this headbutt looks pretty real to me. Watch how Gran Harmada goes for the kick before unleashing a deadly head-to-head blow on Mens Teioh.
Gotta love (somewhat) professional wrestling.
14. Women's College Soccer Not for the Weak
2 of 15Girls don't always like each other...so what's the female headbutting equivalent?
Pulling hair of course.
Elizabeth Lambert of New Mexico was a one-woman wrecking crew against BYU in a college soccer game last year.
After throwing punches and kicks for most of the match, Lambert rips a girl down by her hair.
Cat fight anyone?
13. Headbutt Fail
3 of 15The title of this video says it all.
In a soccer match between two Premier League teams, a player gets into a shouting match with the opposition's head coach.
A soft-looking headbutt ensues and both men fall over as if both just lost a 12-round boxing match.
This is not a good look for soccer players.
12. Oops...I Was Going for the Ball
4 of 15Soccer seems to feature more headbutts than any other sport.
Is it because you are allowed to headbutt the ball?
Watch how a player goes for the ball, but ends up catching his opponent right in the chest (NSFW).
11. Tour De Headbutt
5 of 15The 2010 Tour De France was extremely non-memorable for the U.S.A. With no Americans in the mix for a title, we collectively ignored the event.
Doing so...most of you probably missed this clip.
Mark Renshaw of Australia was attempting to help a teammate by blocking New Zealand's Julian Dean from moving to the "head" of the pack.
A headbutt ensued (:28 second mark) and Renshaw was immediately kicked out of the tour.
Cyclists are sure to take headbutting more seriously than soccer players.
10. Newest Addition To the Family
6 of 15AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso was banned four matches on Monday after headbutting Tottenham assistant coach Joe Jordan during a Champions League tilt.
His accuracy is pin-point as he connects right to Jordan's forehead.
Hmmm...four games for drilling a coach vs getting booted from the Tour De France? Sounds like headbutting rules vary drastically from sport to sport.
9. Holyfield Headbutt
7 of 15Evander Holyfield has had his fair share of weird things happen to him while in the boxing ring.
In this 1989 fight against Michael Dokes, Holyfield decides to go on the attack. Most boxers start with a quick jab, Holyfield goes with the headbutt.
He drills Dokes in the head and proceeds to unleash a vicious blow below the belt.
A headbutt and punch to the groin back-to-back from Holyfield?
OWWWW!
8. The Flying Headbutt
8 of 15One of the worst feelings in the world has to be a headbutt from 20 feet away.
Watch how the late Chris Benoit climbs to the top of the ring and drops a devastating diving headbutt onto his opponent (50 second mark).
Benoit himself is motionless as Kurt Angle begins to roll around in extreme pain.
That had to be a double concussion.
7. Hockey Fight With No Hands? No Problem
9 of 15What to do when you can't use your hands in a hockey fight?
One easy answer...headbutt!
I recommend watching the entire video, but the there is one killer headbutt at the 24-second mark.
6. Headbutt To The Nose
10 of 15There was a lot at stake in Game three of the Western Conference Finals between the L.A. Lakers and the Phoenix Suns last year.
Steve Nash was going for the inbound pass trying to protect a late fourth quarter lead when Derek Fisher closes out for the steal. Fisher ends up drilling Nash in the nose with his head as Nash almost falls to the ground.
Nash has gotten beat up in the playoffs over the years and here is yet another example. This is the greatest headbutt in an important situation.
5. Checkbutt
11 of 15This one is short and sweet as we once again learn to never mess with hockey players.
Tony Mosey leads with his head as he drills the opponent.
Wow.
4. Holyfield Headbutt X2
12 of 15Some of the weirdest moments in boxing history happen when Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield meet in the ring.
Holyfield drills Tyson in the head but the judge says it was accidental.
The fight resumes and Holyfield drills him noggin-to-noggin once again. A stunned Tyson stumbles back and takes a beating from Holyfield.
Evander ends up winning the fight.
3. Double the Headbutt
13 of 15Santino Marella and Tamina had each of their respective opponents laying on the ground in excruciating pain.
What's the best finishing move?
A flying headbutt of course!
The duo synchronizes their punishing headbutts and destroys the wrestlers on the mat.
2. Rodman Headbutts Ref
14 of 15What happens when you eject Dennis Rodman in the first quarter of a game?
Skip ahead to the one minute mark to find out.
1. The Zenedine Zidane
15 of 15The most famous headbutt in the history of sports, Zenedine Zidane did not take kindly to something Marco Materazzi said to him.
Rumor has it that it had to do with his mother.
Let that be a lesson kids...do not say a word about Zidane's mother or you will get a head to the chest.
This intense blow to the chest came from the top of Zidane's head so the pain was minimal for him. This is the textbook way to safely headbutt an opposing player.
Zidane wins the award for the greatest headbutt of all-time—congrats.
