Is Newton an NFL talent?

Randy Galloway is a long-time, highly respected figure in Dallas. He has been covering sports in Dallas for more than 30 years. He has written for every major Dallas paper, and has been a staple of Dallas sports talk radio forever.

Unless I'm mistaken, he wrote a scathing article on the officiating during the infamous David and Goliath skirmish. For the record, he thought David was lucky.

Mr. Galloway has, over the years, had his hits and misses just like everyone else that covers teams for a living.

Randy Galloway has been accused of being pompous, egotistical, outspoken, brash and just about any other adjective that more or less means he says whatever he thinks will piss people off.

What Randy Galloway isn't however is stupid. He has been in this business long enough to know that outlandish comments mean readers/listeners. He knows that the crazier something sounds, the more attention he gets.

The tricky aspect is to find that tightrope to walk that will garner attention without ruining your credibility. He's crossed that line before, but 30 years in the business (or so) makes that leash really, really long.

Needless to say, Mr. Galloway's article today states that the Cowboys should draft Cam Newton in the first round with the ninth overall pick.

Are you kidding me? He actually compares Cam Newton to Aaron Rodgers. Incomprehensible, right? Am I off base here? His assertion is that Newton could sit for a few years, and take over for Romo when the time comes.

Whether or not he turns out to be Aaron Rodgers or Quincy Carter aside, why would the 6-10 Cowboys take a player to sit for three years? In the free-agent era, where players change teams like Kim Kardashian changes athletes, why would anyone take a player knowing he can't help immediately?

These aren't the Patriots we're talking about. These are the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys don't exactly have a wealth of talent. Not in the starting lineup, and certainly not on the bench. The Cowboys need help on the offensive line, defensive line, defensive backfield...You get the picture. Hell, they don't even have a defensive coordinator right now.

Cam Newton may be a fine player some day, but then again, he may be Vince Young or Matt Leinart. It's hard to speculate on the NFL draft, but I'll go out on a limb and say there's no way Jason Garrett will allow his team to be torpedoed in this manner.

One more thing. Shouldn't the QB of your team be baggage free?

Should he really be coming to the league in order to elude the NCAA posse?

I don't want my first-round QB draft pick to have been kicked out of school for cheating. For having had a stolen computer in his possession. I don't want him to have been made to look incredibly average by the Oregon Knights. I mean Ducks.

More than anything, I don't want my first-round QB to be Cam Newton.

Somehow I think Randy Galloway knows that.
