Miami Dolphins Interview Cowboys' Tight Ends Coach John Garrett For OC Job

Chris J. NelsonJan 12, 2011

Although his brother was just named the Dallas Cowboys' newest head coach, tight ends coach John Garrett might not be long for his brother's staff.

NFL.com's Jason LaCanfora reports Jason Garrett's older brother interviewed today for the Dolphins' offensive coordinator position vacated by Dan Henning, who is reportedly retiring.

A Princeton alum, Garrett served as an offensive assistant/wide receivers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals in the mid-90s after a brief pro career.

Garrett went on to become the Arizona Cardinals' quarterbacks coach from 1999-2000, followed by stints as a offensive assistant by the Bengals from 2001-2002; a scout for the Bengals in 2003; and wide receivers coach at the University of Virginia from 2004-2007.

Also reportedly under consideration for the Dolphins' offensive coordinator job are Chargers tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski and Hartford Colonials (UFL) head coach Chris Palmer. Chudzinski, however, is reportedly the favorite to follow former Chargers' defensive coordinator Ron Rivera's staff with the Carolina Panthers.

Palmer would be a candidate certainly familiar with Sparano, as the Dolphins' head coach served under Palmer at the University of New Haven (1986-1987), Boston University (1988-1989) and Cleveland Browns (1999-2000). The two also served as offensive assistants on Bill Parcells' staff with the Dallas Cowboys in 2006.

Whoever takes the job with Miami will be tasked with revitalizing an offense that became stale and predictable during three seasons under Henning.

The Dolphins' offense particularly suffered in 2010 with the lack of progression by quarterback Chad Henne, an unproductive running game due to poor blocking, and poor play-calling by Henning.

In addition to the offensive coordinator position, the Dolphins must also fill the roles of quarterbacks coach and strength and conditioning coach after David Lee and Evan Marcus left for the college ranks.
