New York Knicks: Do They Need Melo? No .. So Then What?

Zachary CharlesJan 9, 2011

As of 8:30 tonight, it seems like the Nets are about to pull the trigger on a crazy blockbuster that will help them possibly fight for a bottom seed playoff spot. A starting lineup of Billups, Hamilton, Carmelo, Humphries and Lopez looks pretty good when you look at lineups throughout the bottom of the East. So with Carmelo most likely out of the picture, what do the Knicks focus on?

I watched the game against the Lakers, and two things really stood out to me, as they have throughout the entire season. WE CANT REBOUND! It's as simple as this: we get out-rebounded by almost every team. The second thing is that we really lack depth.ย

How to solve these issues.ย

In order to solve issue number one, Donnie Walsh has to get on the phone an acquire a CENTER! Not a 6'10" forward a 7' center who can come in rebound and block shots. While Amar'e is averaging nine rebounds a game, we are getting no production from Turaif (2.9 Rebounds Per Game) and Mozgov who is in the doghouse averaging two rpg.

There are plenty of people the Knicks can go out and get to help this problem. They can get Samuel Dalembert from Kings, Marcus Camby from Portland, or even try to get Robin Lopez from the Suns. The Knicks can not get to the next level or play against big teams when they get our rebounded like crazy. Against the Lakers they were out rebounded 61-42, which is totally unacceptable. Kobe, Odom and Gasol combined out rebounded the Knicks! That's just not normal!.ย

The second issue is a little more complicated as it is the issue of making us a deeper and more prolific team. While we had Williams, Walker and Douglas, I believed that we should have looked to move Douglas and Walker to find a backup point guard, and a good wing player who can chip in on the boards. Players that come to mind are, Jonny Flynn, Omri Caspi and Andre Iguadala. Those three can help bring our team to another level.ย

While the first issue is more important, Donnie pulls the trigger on either of these issues. I think our team can get to that next level and compete with teams that have guys bigger than 6'10"

If anyone has any other players in mind comment and ask questions if interestedย
