Sir Alex Ferguson started seven men who took home the UEFA Champions League trophy last May but still came up short against the determined Russian side in Super Cup action this weekend. Zenit also played seven from last May’s starting XI that dispatched Rangers 2-0 in the UEFA Cup.

Zenit St. Petersburg did have the advantage of being in better shape. The club is now past the halfway mark in this year’s Russian Premier League. Another key to the match was Zenit’s recent signing of Portuguese midfielder Danny who scored the club’s second goal, making English international Rio Ferdinand look rather silly in the process.

Sir Alex will have to wait to add a third Super Cup to his list.

In other United news

Forgotten forward Louis Saha is moving to Everton after the 30-year-old agreed to a deal. He will team with former Red Devil Phil Neville. Saha has battled a series of injuries including a knee issue that sidelined him for much of last year.

Also, Tottenham Hotspur and United remain deadlocked in the battle to sign Dimitar Berbatov. But with Manchester City's new Arab owners meeting Tottenham's asking price, it's looking doubtful as to whether United will land him before the deadline closes?
