Extinct Dino: Raptors Ship Jarrett Jack to New Orleans

Sachin AroraNov 21, 2010

The Toronto Raptors announced Saturday night they shipped Jarrett Jack, Marcus Banks and David Andersen to New Orleans for three time all-star Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless.

A lot of people seem to be upset with this deal, but let's go ahead, break it down and look at it logically.

Peja is a great three-point shooter and could be very useful down the stretch even if he only gets 20 minutes a game. He's very experienced and can help the team quite a bit.

The best part about acquiring Peja though, is his beautiful expiring contract. This contract will get the Raptors a little under $15 million of cap space this offseason and could help them make a run at a player such as Marc Gasol.

Bayless is certainly a downgrade from Jack for now but has tons of potential and could end up being a great point guard in the future. He's quick, athletic and can dunk the ball very well. Defensively, he's not bad either, and I'd say he's going to be a good piece for the Raptors future.

He doesn't seem to be a pure point guard, but there's tons of potential here, and a lot of it was unrecognized playing behind Chris Paul.

Jose Calderon is going to have a much larger role now as the starter and could end up playing like his former self, which was a very reliable starting point guard.

Also, with Andersen gone, Ed Davis will have minutes when he returns from injury.

Losing Jarrett Jack will be tough to handle, he played with such great heart and will be missed, but it was for the best, long term. David Andersen was solid at times but didn't make a big enough impact to make his departure painful, and Marcus Banks was a great defender, but didn't really have a role with this team.

I wish Jack all the best with the Hornets, and hopefully he will get some minutes at the shooting guard position with Chris Paul playing point guard.

Both players are expected to be in uniform Wednesday against the 76ers, and it should be fun to watch.
