Cruz Azul Shuts Out Santos in Latest Mexican League Game Between the Two Teams
Cruz Azul defeated Santos Laguna in its home stadium of Estadio Azul as the battle of the first two teams in the 2010-2011 Mexican League.
Both teams were also hoping to measure their strength for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Cruz Azul was dominant from the beginning (up to a point) with its consistency and discipline. Alejandro Vela scored the first goal of the game with a head butt in minute five.
Vela was able to execute an attack from the corner with Horacio Cervantes receiving the ball and scoring the second goal with his head in minute 46.
The nail in the hopes of Santos Laguna to at least score was buried with the third goal by Christian Jimenez in minute 88 with a direct kick into the goal post.
The only mistake that Cruz Azul made was that at one point it was resting on its laurels and Santos Laguna was able to take advantage by dominating the game. The visiting team was able to place Cruz Azul on the defensive.
Horacio Cervantes was able to arouse Cruz Azul with a quick decision to make the defense and offense air-tight. After the second goal by Cervantes, Cruz Azul was able to focus again on the game.
Mauricio Morales was the referee who was able to impose order as well as yellow cards for anti-sports conduct on Christian Gimenez, Gonzalo Pineda and Emanuel Vila of Cruz Azul.
Morales also imposed yellow cards on Jose Antonio Olivera and Carlos Darwin Olivero of Santos Laguna.
The substitutions helped Cruz Azul more than it did Santos Laguna.
In defeating Santos Laguna by a final score of 3-0, Cruz Azul was able to maintain its top spot in the Mexican League with this victory.
Most Valuable Player: Horacio Cervantes
