WWE's Million Dollar Couple: A Waste of Diva Maryse's Talent?
Hello, everyone! In my last article, I wrote about a WWE couple I wanted to see reunite on RAW. Well, this time around, I've decided to discuss one that I feel should split up.
I am, of course, talking about the Million Dollar Couple, Ted DiBiase and Maryse. Now, please understand that I am in no way, shape, or form a DiBiase hater like many people seem to be. I actually like him, and I have ever since he debuted on RAW and started antagonizing Randy Orton. I loved his brash, cocky, self-assured attitude. Also, much like his father, Ted Jr. is a great wrestler.
However, not everyone thinks so highly of this young talent. It seems that the higher-ups in the WWE notice that, perhaps, there is something missing with him. This looks to be the reason that, on the June 21st episode of RAW, there was a major shakeup in that the Sexiest of the Sexy, Maryse, was suddenly paired up with him onscreen.
I will admit that, right from the start, I wasn't very thrilled by the pairing. I thought if Maryse was to be paired with any male superstar, it would have to be Edge and nobody else. Maybe this seems random to you readers right now, but hear me out—I have wanted to see these two together ever since the whole Edge and Vickie wedding on SmackDown! back in the summer of 2008. This was even before Alicia Fox came on the scene as their wedding planner. I kept hoping for something to happen between Edge and a diva that would break up the relationship he had with Vickie, especially if the wedding ended up never taking place—and the only diva I could really picture him with was Maryse. The reasons? Well, both the Rated R Superstar and the Sexiest of the Sexy are hot, amazing at playing obnoxious heels, and are incredibly convincing. It just seemed it would fit.
Alas, it never happened, and I have to deal with my second-favorite diva (my favorite being Melina) walking around on the arm of Ted DiBiase instead. Life goes on.
A couple of weeks into the pairing, I started to warm up to it a little. Maryse and Ted do seem to have pretty good chemistry together. However, in the nearly four months they've been an onscreen item, things have really gotten stale for the French-Canadian diva.
You would have expected that, as RAW's golden couple, Ted and Maryse would have had a nice feud against another couple. DiBiase began feuding with John Morrison, and it seemed that the returning Melina would join up with him again. It was something I was very excited for, and I had hoped would happen, but of course, it never did. What we got instead was a mini-feud with R-Truth and Eve, who aren't even established as a "couple" although Eve now seems to have been established as Truth's valet. They had a mixed tag match, the men battled each other one-on-one, and the four even engaged in a very corny song and dance-off on September 13th, during the annual RAW Roulette. It didn't seem to go anywhere other than DiBiase losing to Truth last night to earn a spot on Team RAW at the Bragging Rights pay-per-view. Maryse and Eve didn't even get into a fight outside the ring like I expected.
Also, a few weeks back, it seemed that Ted had himself an admirer. This individual appeared to be more of a stalker, but I digress...Last week, it was revealed that Goldust was the admirer, but he didn't want to possess DiBiase or even Maryse—it was the Million Dollar belt he was after. This storyline went from intriguing to downright silly in a matter of seconds.
Then, in last night's big match, the golden thief appeared on the ramp with his NXT rookie, Aksana, in an attempt to provide a distraction. I see this feud as extremely dull if it's only going to be for the Million Dollar belt. I do, however, like the fact that Aksana may be brought into it, because it gives Maryse something to do other than just stand by DiBiase's side.
Now that I've gotten the Million Dollar Couple premise out of my system, I'm going to turn my focus to the original subject of this article—Maryse. Does everyone remember when she was a regularly active in-ring competitor? I know I do, and I severely miss it. She isn't getting anywhere as Ted DiBiase's onscreen girlfriend, as she isn't wrestling as much in the role. She is getting to give promos with Ted on occasion, but it seems they've argued more than anything when we get a backstage segment.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I miss the bitchy, arrogant, talk to the hand-gesturing, smug Maryse that used to utilize some really good wrestling moves and maneuvers on her nemeses in the ring. OK, she is not the world's best wrestler, but I thought she had gotten damn good back when she was on SmackDown! and had some great matches there in 2008. She has several great moves at her disposal, including the camel clutch, a swinging backbreaker, the French TKO kick, the French Kiss DDT, and an inverted Russian legsweep. Maryse also has the talent to exude all of her charisma during her matches, something that a few women wrestlers lack...and I honestly believe her talent is being wasted due to her pairing with Ted DiBiase. I mean, when was the last time we saw the blonde bombshell in a match longer than a couple of minutes that really told a story—mixed tag or singles?
It's a disappointment that the WWE turned an otherwise interesting angle into something stupid in having Goldust stalking the Million Dollar belt. What they should have done was have another diva—or rookie diva—going after DiBiase. This could have led to a major feud between Maryse and the other woman. We could have gotten to see more of Maryse in the ring, and plenty of promos by her that would have shown us even more depth to her already amazing character. We would have had the opportunity to witness a new side of her, a jealous, maybe even envious side. I feel this is the only way the pairing would have been at all beneficial for her at this point, as it seems to exist solely for DiBiase's benefit.
Sadly, though, instead, we're getting a feud between DiBiase and Goldust. Possibly, Aksana will be at the gold one's side, as this will be the only chance to make things at all interesting for Maryse. Otherwise, she will just be arm candy and her talent will continue to go to waste for who knows how much longer.
