Five Reasons Why US Soccer Is One Of The Greatest In The World

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoSep 27, 2010

The US Soccer Team is expected to face Colombia and Poland in their next friendly games within the next month.

The team itself is preparing for the friendly games in the aftermath of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, in order to prepare for the next one.

Our team is under appreciated in our own country because, either, we are not familiar with the US Soccer team or we have a preference for football/soccer teams outside of the USA.

Please do not get me wrong since I support teams such as Brazil, Spain, Germany, England, as well as African countries such as Cameroon, Senegal, and Rwanda.

But, if we are to get US Soccer off the ground, we have to support our team in good times and bad. It is not easy especially since we support the familiar or the winners of the day.

It is for this reason that I reiterate my support for US Soccer as well as one of its teams in the MLS called CD Chivas USA.

My support for US Soccer is reinforced with this article by naming the five reasons US Soccer is one of the best.

Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan is the number one example of why US Soccer is one of the best. He was born on March 4, 1982 in California and is a midfielder for the US Soccer Team and the LA Galaxy.

His participation in the US Victory over Algeria during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, in spite of the odds, was one of the greatest historical moments in the history of US Soccer.

He is a household name in both sides of the Atlantic with his time in Everton as part of his resume. Landon Donovan was an all-time leader in goals and assists within 2009.

He is also the three-time winner of the US Soccer Male Athlete of the Year award in 2003, 2004, and 2009. The performance of this venerable player was great during the 2009 FIFA Confederation Cup.

Landon Donovan has also helped the youth in his community. He was also involved in the fight against Malaria as well.

Carlos Bocanegra

Carlos Bocanegra is another California native who made similar strides in US Soccer.

He was instrumental as the Captain of the US Team in his country's victory over Honduras and its participation in the FIFA Confederation Cup of 2009 and the 2010 World Cup.

He is also known in England, having been a Captain of Fulham during his four years there as well as 100 appearances with the Premier League Team.

Bocanegra was also named MLS Defender of the Year during his period with the Chicago Fire.

He currently plays for Saint Etienne in France to rave reviews in a country that is recovering from the internal strife of its team.

Bocanegra made 13 appearances with the US Soccer team in 2003 and broke his own record with 14 in 2009.

Demarcus Beasley

The state of Indiana is known as the Hoosier State and has given the world many famous people.

Demarcus Beasley is one of them who has contributed to making US Soccer the powerhouse that it is in the 21st Century.

Beasley played for the Chicago Fire, LA Galaxy, PSV Eindhoven (Holland), Manchester City (England) and the Rangers (Scotland).

During his time in Europe, he scored the most goals of any player from the USA in the UEFA Champions League.

Beasley was also the recipient of the MLS Best XI in 2003 and made history by becoming the first person under 21 years of age to win this honor.

His two appearances in the FIFA World Cup also cemented his place in US Soccer history.

Jonathan Bornstein is another California native who is one of my favorites since he currently plays for CD Chivas USA.

During his time with CD Chivas USA, Bornstein made 30 appearances and was the recipient of the MLS Rookie of the Year award.

He will be with CD Chivas USA until the end of the current MLS Season of 2010. He will then play for Tigres UANL in the Mexican League game.

He appeared 13 times for the US Soccer Team in 2009 and was named MLS Best XI in the year 2007.

Jozy Altidore

While I should have placed Jozy Altidore as the first reason why US Soccer is one of the greatest, he is still in this article for his behavior off the field as well as in the field.

In the beginning of 2010, Haiti was affected by a major earthquake that practically destroyed the country. Jozy Altidore who is a native of New Jersey was one of those who lost his family in the earthquake.

The response of Jozy Altidore was to take time off from his schedule with Hull City FC in England and fly to Haiti to help the victims.

Jozy Altidore was one of the people who took the cause of Haiti to heart and others followed his lead.

He also scored six goals for the US Soccer team during its qualifying games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Altidore also scored for the US against Trinidad and Tobago during their game in 2009 in Tennessee by using a hat trick.

He also made history in La Liga in Spain by becoming the first US Citizen to score a goal against Club Atletico Bilbao in 2008.
