Breaking News: Maradona Wants Argentine Government To Restore Him As Coach

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoSep 18, 2010

Diego Armando Maradona seems to love the spotlight like a mouse likes cheese. He has just finished a meeting with the press in which he talked about his reunion with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and her husband, Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner.

The purpose of the meeting is the possibility of asking for the intervention of the Argentine Government in restoring him as coach of its National Football/Soccer Team. In addition to commenting about his future, Maradona talked about football/soccer and the great memories of their times together.

The reason for this article are the following: 1. This is a breaking news story, 2. My recent participation in a Round Table Discussion with Saura Bhattacharjee, and 3. The need to express an opinion.

Diego Armando Maradona of all people should know that FIFA has strong rules concerning the separation of governments from football/soccer. FIFA has not been afraid to suspend or threaten with suspension countries whose governments intervened in one way or another in the sports.

Nigeria was almost expelled from FIFA after its President dissolved the Nigerian Football Association. Nigeria relented after pressure from FIFA. France was warned after its President Nikolas Sarkozy planned to investigate the French Football Federation for the revolt during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

While Diego Armando Maradona was a great footballer, his time in the sport as well as coach has come to an end. He had two years as coach of the Argentine National Football/Soccer team to prove to the world that he could help his country win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The result was that he blew it with his arrogance and refusal to change the positions of the players in the wake of Argentina's game against Germany. What worked against Nigeria, South Korea, and Greece failed miserably in its game against Germany.

Maradona can do the world a favor by retiring, and writing his memoirs which could include excerpts from his career. The time has come to pass the baton in Argentine Football/Soccer to a newer generation or another coach.

It would be better for World Football and Argentina.
