Cruz Azul faced Atlas in Estadio Jalisco Guadalajara Mexico in a game that helped the team regain its self confidence at least for the moment.

Horacio Cervantes used his head after a corner kick by Cristian Gimenez to score the first goal at 15 minutes for Cruz Azul. Javier Antonio Orozco scored the second goal for the team at 34 minutes.

Christian Gimenez scored the third goal for Cruz Azul with an assist from Maximiliano Biancucchi within 88 minutes.

Atlas was able to avoid going scoreless with a goal by Gregorio Isidro Torres Ramirez with an assist from Hebert Efrain Alferez.

Cruz Azul needed the win in order to recover its self confidence of winning one game and then losing another on different occasions. It also needed to win to obtain first place in the Mexican League 2010-2011 season.

The team was in full domination of the ball and the game. Cruz Azul was able to pass the ball within each other and maintain a strong defense. It also was able to be consistent in its play.

The only negative note for the team was the expulsion of Horacio Cervantes.

He was expelled for using violence against the Atlas player Hebert Efrain Alferez within 83 minutes. It was a disgrace for Cruz Azul even though  the team was winning.

In the end, Cruz Azul was able to win and overtake Santos Laguna by entering first place with nine points. Cruz Azul will face Arabe Unido from Panama on Sept 15, 2010 and Toronto FC in the CONCACAF Champions League on Sept. 21, 2010.

Cruz Azul will also face Queretaro on Sept 18, 2010 in another Mexican League game.

Atlas needed to win in order to rise from the bottom of the Mexican League 2010-2011 table. Atlas is undergoing recent turmoil with the replacement of Carlos Ischia with Jose Luis Mata as coach after a disastrous beginning in the season.

The team was unable to recover from its internal strife and it appears that the new coach has been unable to rally the team. It is a pity that Atlas had to remain in last place after this game.

Atlas has its next game against Monterrey who recently defeated Tigres.
