Guillermo Franco Retires From Mexican Soccer Team and Talks About New Generation

Guillermo Franco announced that he is no longer going to play for the Mexican National Soccer Team. He gave as the principal reason that a new generation is needed in the team.

He made his statements in an interview with a popular radio program in Mexico called Espacio Deportivo or Sports Segment.

Mr. Franco thanked the people of Mexico for his support and even forgave his detractors saying that no one pleases everyone.

According to a poll conducted by the US Latin Radio and TV Conglomerate Univision, 50 percent of the people polled agreed that the time has come for Guillermo Franco to leave.

Guillermo Franco was born in Corrientes, Argentina in 1976. He had an early start in his country playing for Club Atletico San Lorenzo from 1995 to 2002.

The aspiring future soccer star left his native Argentina for Mexico and played for CF Monterrey between 2002 to 2005. He also became a naturalized Mexican Citizen. 

Mr. Franco started playing for his adopted country's national team in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 World Cup.

It was in Mexico where Guillermo Franco began to acquire a reputation for being a striker that was to be feared. His reputation began to extend to Europe where he was signed with the Spanish team Villareal in 2006.

Regardless, there comes a time when people have to say that the time has come to pass the baton to a new generation.

Guillermo Franco has earned his place in the history of world soccer including Mexico. He does the right thing in retiring by protecting his legacy. My best wishes for him and his family.
