Kevin Anderson v Somdev Devvarman

A mismatch in round one sees the big-serving Kevin Anderson take on Somdev Devvarman of India. Devverman is a very poor player and has done well to make it to only his second US Open, age 25. Kevin Anderson will serve through his opponent in this match and with his powerful swings should win the majority of points. Devverman’s a fighter but I do not see him being able to cope with the Anderson serve, nor have enough talent in his game to win the majority of the rallies. Great value on Anderson.

Sara Errani v Tathiana Garbin

A meeting of two Italians in the first round of the US Open. Neither Sara Errani or Tathiana Garbin have had much success of late. But Sara Errani stepped up her game at Pilot Pen last week; defeting Jie Zheng before losing in three sets to Sam Stosur. Tathiana Garbin’s rut is set to continue with another defeat on Monday.

It’s been a tough year for Dinara Safina, struggling with injuries. Safina has found some form over the past month or so on the hard courts, mainly losing to the top or in form players such as Kim Clijsters and Maria Kirilenko. She is finding a way to beat the lesser players, including Daniela Hantuchova in two tie break sets last week. An improvement in her service game will make this one more comfortable, otherwise I fully expect the Russian to repeat her victory in Yale on Monday. Daniela Hantuchova struggles for consistency and could be overpowered by her bigger and strong opponent once again.
