Stricker Wins John Deere Classic, Shoots 26-Under For the Tournament

Thomas MorelandJul 11, 2010

Steve Stricker shot a 26-under to defeat Paul Goydos at the John Deere Classic today.

Goydos hung in there at 24-under, but needed Stricker to sprain his ankle, or become severely ill.

A couple of other players tried to make a futile run at Stricker, but came up short.

Those guys would be Shaun Micheel at minus-19 (he ended up in fourth), and Jeff Maggert, who finished with a minus-20, good enough for third place.

Imagine that. At one point these two guys were tied for third at minus-21. Holy birdies, Batman.

I wonder if Mr. Freeze has anything in store for Steve Stricker in Scotland.

This is scoring insanity with the lift and place after the heavy rains. It's like precision lawn darts with little white balls.

Matt Jones did not have that special a day out there, and is currently only minus one today, and in fifth place at minus-17 for the tournament.

Tim Clarke tied for seventh and scored some fantasy points for my team this week as my C-player in Yahoo Fantasy Golf.

Stricker was my A-player so I am closer to passing all experts now on Yahoo. One expert to go, with less than 50 points separating us.

Here's is your final leader board:

Steve Stricker: -26,  Paul Goydos: -24, Jeff Maggert: -20, Shaun Micheel: -19, Matt Jones: -17, Vaughn Taylor: -16, Charley Hoffman: -15, Tim Clarke: -15, Brendon De Jonge: -15, Brett Quigley -14.

Goydos, Maggert, Taylor, De Jonge, and Quigley especially benefit from these high fihishes in money and FedEx Cup points.

Stricker, Micheel, Jones, Hoffman, and Clarke are doing great in the FedEx Cup points race.

See next week's FedEx Cup Standing Update on Bleacherreport.com by Thomas Moreland coming soon. Six weeks left until the Fed Ex Cup playoffs begin.

Steve Stricker is going to move up to second in the points standings with this win.

Collectively, the last group is minus-71 for the tournament.

Welcome to the end of the weekend.
