Wimbledon 2010: Picking All 64 First Round Matches

Jordan SchwartzJun 20, 2010

I see four seeds bowing out in the first round , including Robin Soderling (6), Mikhail Youzhny (13), John Isner (23), and Albert Montanes (28), and third-seeded Novak Djokovic struggling to get by Olivier Rochus .

Roger Federer (1) def. Alejandro Falla

Federer is 4-0 versus Falla, including a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win at Halle earlier this month.

TOP NEWS

Brooklyn Nets v Milwaukee Bucks

Ilija Bozoljac def. Nicolas Massu

Bozoljac has a far less decorated career, but he reached the second round at his only Wimbledon two years ago, while Massu hasn't won a match here since '05.

Janko
Tipsarevic def. Arnaud Clement

Tipsarevic beat Clement in straight sets on the hard courts of Metz last year and will be coming off a good result at the Wimbledon tune-up in the Netherlands.

Tommy Robredo (30) def. Peter Luczak

Robredo is 2-0 against Luczak , and while both matches were played on clay, Robredo proved with a third-round finish here last year that he can also win on grass.

Feliciano Lopez (22) def. Jesse Levine

This should be a tough draw for Lopez because Levine reached the second and third rounds in his first two Wimbledons over the past two years, but the Spaniard is a two-time quarterfinalist, so I'll give him the edge.

Carsten
Ball def. Ricardas Berankis

Ball has dropped just four games in two non-Tour matches against the Lithuanian.

Viktor
Troicki def. Igor Kunitsyn

Troicki has never dropped a set in three career victories over Kunitsyn.

Jurgen
Melzer (16) def. Dustin Brown

You don't see too many Jamaicans make the main draw at Wimbledon, but Brown's stay should be brief, as he faces a man who has reached the third round here the past two years.

Tomas Berdych (12) def. Andrey Golubev

Berdych has reached at least the third round each of the past five years, including a quarterfinals appearance in '07, while Golubev is 0-1 at Wimbledon.

Benjamin Becker def. Ryan Sweeting

Sweeting will be a tough out, having beat Becker in straight sets in the third round of qualifying at Delray Beach last year, and  making his way through qualifying this week to advance to his first main draw at Wimbledon. But Becker will be coming off a good result in the Netherlands and has reached the second round here the past two years.

Rainer Schuettler def. Dmitry Tursunov

It seems strange that these two veterans have never met. Tursunov always used to make the third or fourth round here, but he bowed out in the first round last year, part of five straight opening-match exits in Grand Slams. Schuettler is also not what he used to be, but he's only two years removed from a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and he's playing better than Tursunov in '10.

Stanislas Wawrinka (20) def. Denis Istomin

This should be one of the better first-round matches. Wawrinka has reached the fourth round at the last two Wimbledon tournaments, but Istomin will be coming off a good result in Eastbourne.

Victor Hanescu (31) def. Andrey Kuznetsov

Hanescu reached the third round last year, while the 19-year-old Kuznetsov is ranked 272nd in the world and has only played three career matches on tour–none this season.

Marsel
Ilhan def. Marcos Daniel

Ilhan defeated Daniel in straight sets in the second round of qualifying at the ATP World Tour Masters tournament in Miami earlier this year. Ilhan is also 2-0 in first rounds at Grand Slams, while the Brazilian is 1-13 (0-2 at Wimbledon).

Igor Andreev def. Daniel Brands

Andreev made the fourth round in '09, while Brands is playing in his first London major and is 0-4 at all Grand Slams.

Nikolay Davydenko (7) def. Kevin Anderson

This is Davydenko's weakest Grand Slam, but Anderson is 0-5 at majors.

Novak Djokovic (3) def. Olivier Rochus

This is not a good first-round draw for Djokovic. He's lost three of four career meetings with Rochus, including a tight match earlier this year on the hard courts of Miami. But the only time these two played on grass–in Halle last year–the Serb won in straight sets. That, combined with the fact that Djokovic's quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon '09 began an active streak of four straight quarterfinal appearances at majors, leaves me giving him the slight edge.

Taylor Dent def. Juan Ignacio Chela

Dent is 2-0 versus Chela and he's had a little more success at Wimbledon.

Brendan Evans def. Jesse Huta Galung

This will be a friends-and-family-only crowd watching the Nos. 317 and 283 players in the world do battle. I'll flip a patriotic coin and take the American, who also has a slightly better career record (5-14 vs. 3-12).

Paolo Lorenzi def. Albert Montanes (28)

Lorenzi beat Montanes on the clay of Rome this year and since neither has a good career record on grass, I'll stick with the Italian to win his first match at a major in his Wimbledon debut.

Gael Monfils (21) def. Leonardo Mayer

This is Monfils' first Grass Court Championships since a third-round finish in '07, and while Mayer is 5-1 in first-round matches at majors, the Frenchman won their only meeting in Mexico last year.

Karol Beck def. Santiago Ventura

Beck caught a break when his original first-round opponent, Philipp Petzschner, moved to the bottom half of the draw to replace Ernests Gulbis. Beck, who has reached the Round of 32 here, should have an easier time with Ventura, who is 0-2 at Wimbledon.

Eduardo Schwank def. Evgeny Korolev

Neither has won a match at the All England Club, so I'll go with Schwank , who defeated Korolev, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of qualifying on the clay courts of Madrid last year.

Lleyton Hewitt (15) def. Maximo Gonzalez

Hewitt is riding high after defeating Federer at the finals of Halle, and the Australian has reached the fourth round the past six years here, so I don't see him losing his opener.

Marin Cilic (11) def. Florian Mayer

Cilic has reached at least the third round the last two years.

Mardy Fish def. Bernard Tomic

Fish reached the third round for the third time in '09.

Yen-Hsun Lu def. Horacio Zeballos

Zeballos is playing his first Wimbledon and Lu has exited in the first round four consecutive times. I'll take Lu because he's at least won some matches on grass in his career, while Zeballos has almost no experience on the surface.

Ivan Ljubicic (17) def. Michal Przysiezny

Ljubicic hasn't won a match here since a third-round result in '07, but he's drawn an opponent who is 0-2 at majors.

Philipp
Kohlschreiber (29) def. Potito Starace

These two have met on clay three times, with Kohlschreiber winning the most recent pair of matches. He's reached the third round at five straight Grand Slams, including the '09 Wimbledon.

Teimuraz
Gabashvili def. Ramon Delgado

Neither player has had any success on clay with Delgado holding a 2-8 lifetime record on the surface and Gabashvili at 1-7. This is really a toss-up, so I'll go with the younger man, who is at a better point in his career.

Michael Llodra def. Jesse Witten

Llodra has 124 wins in his career; Witten has two. The Frenchman will also be carrying some momentum from the Eastbourne tune-up.

Andy Roddick (5) def. Rajeev Ram

The three-time and defending finalist should have no problem with his fellow American, who is 0-1 at this event.

Fernando Verdasco (8) def. Fabio Fognini

Verdasco is 2-0 versus Fognini, including a win earlier this year in Mexico, and the eight seed has reached the fourth round in back-to-back tries here.

Michael Russell def. Pere Riba -Madrid

Russell is 3-10 all-time on grass; Riba -Madrid is 0-1.

Andreas Beck def. Jamie Baker

Beck is 5-2 in the first round at majors with both of his losses coming at Wimbledon, but Baker is a wild card ranked 259 in the world, and he is 0-3 at his home country's Grand Slam.

Julien Benneteau (32) def. Kristof Vliegen

Neither has had a great deal of success here, but Vliegen has been heading downhill since '06, when he was ranked 34th in the world, to his current ranking of 167.

Nicolas Almagro (19) def. Andreas Seppi

Almagro is on the rise, having reached the third round of seven straight majors, but Seppi has advanced to the Round of 32 here the past two years as well, so this should be a close one.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Tobias Kamke

Garcia-Lopez is coming off a finals appearance at the tune-up in Eastbourne and he's facing a guy who has never won here.

Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Marco Chiudinelli

Dolgopolov is coming on strong after a third-round finish at his first Grand Slam in Paris and then a semifinal result in Eastbourne.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10) def. Robert Kendrick

Tsonga beat Kendrick in straight sets at Miami last year.

Juan Carlos Ferrero (14) def. Xavier Malisse

Malisse reached the semis at the Netherlands tune-up, but Ferrero beat him in straight sets on the grass of Queen's Club in '09.

Julian Reister def. Rik De Voest

These are both qualifiers, so they've proven they can win a few matches on grass. Therefore, I'll give the edge to Reister who just advanced to the third round at Roland Garros.

Ivan Dodig def. Oscar Hernandez

Hernandez beat Dodig in three sets in the first round of qualifying at the clay event in Monte Carlos this year, but the Spaniard is 0-5 at Wimbledon.

Sam Querrey (18) def. Sergiy Stakhovsky

This is an unfortunate draw for both players, who each have a great shot at advancing deep into this tournament after both winning tune-up events. Querrey, who just won in London, has a slightly better track record at Wimbledon than Stakhovsky, who could be tired after just taking the title in the Netherlands on Saturday.

Gilles Simon (26) def. Guillermo Alcaide

If the trend continues, Simon should reach the quarters this year after advancing one additional round each of the past four tries at Wimbledon. Alcaide, meanwhile, is a qualifier playing in his first main draw at a major.

Michael Berrer def. Illya Marchenko

Marchenko is playing in his first Wimbledon, while Berrer reached the second round in '07.

Jarkko
Nieminen def. Stefan Koubek

Nieminen, who reached the quarters here in '06, has won four of five meetings with Koubek, including the most recent one, which came at a non-Tour event in Helsinki two years ago.

Andy Murray (4) def. Jan Hajek

Hajek is 0-1 at Wimbledon, while Murray reached the semis last year.

Robby Ginepri def. Robin Soderling (6)

Ginepri hasn't won a match here since he reached the fourth round in '04, but I think he has a good shot at an upset here because he beat Soderling in straight sets in Chennai earlier this year.

Frederico Gil def. Marcel Granollers

Gil has won the last five meetings with Granollers, so the man from Portugal has a good shot at picking up his first win at a major.

Martin Fischer def. Go Soeda

In a battle of qualifiers, I see Fischer picking up his first career win on Tour because he defeated Soeda in the semifinals of a non-Tour event in Yokohama last year.

Thomaz
Bellucci (25) def. Ricardo Mello

Mello beat his fellow Brazilian at a clay court tournament in their home country earlier this year, but while neither has had great success on grass, Bellucci is 1-1 on the surface in his career, while Mello is 0-5.

Marcos Baghdatis (24) def. Lukas Lacko

Baghdatis has reached the fourth round here each of the last three times he's played Wimbledon.

Jeremy Chardy def. Daniel Gimeno -Traver

These two split a pair of clay court matches in '07, so I'll give it to Chardy, who is a slightly better grass-courter.

Florent Serra def. Simon Greul

Serra is 7-12 on grass on his career, while Greul is just 1-4.

David Ferrer (9) def. Nicolas Kiefer

Ferrer has won 19 consecutive first-round matches at majors.

Dudi
Sela def. Mikhail Youzhny (13)

Sela defeated Youzhny in a best-of-five-set match last year and the Israeli is coming off a straight-sets win over Roddick at Queen's Club earlier this month.

Marc Gicquel def. Paul-Henri Mathieu

Mathieu leads the all-time series, 3-2, but Gicquel won the most recent meeting in convincing 6-4, 6-0 fashion last year and he is a little better grass-court player.

Santiago Giraldo def. Thiemo De Bakker

Giraldo ousted De Bakker in the third round of qualifying at Lyon in '08.

Nicolas Mahut def. John Isner (23)

Mahut defeated Isner in straight sets on the grass of Queen's Club two years ago.

Philipp
Petzschner  (33) def. Stephane Robert

Petzschner became the 33rd seed when Gulbis withdrew with a hamstring injury. Petzschner has reached the second and third round in his two Wimbledons.

Blaz
Kavcic def. Lukasz Kubot

Kavcic beat Kubot in a tight two-setter two years ago.

James Blake def. Robin Haase

Blake took down Haase, 6-3, 6-1, in Delray Beach earlier this year.

Rafael Nadal (2) def. Kei Nishikori

It took Nadal three sets, but he defeated Nishikori at Queen's Club in '08.
