There were few surprises in the 2008 ESPY Awards that took place on Sunday, July 20.
Allbeit some shocking things did happen, such as the fact that Justin Timberlake was a great host, and that Tiger Woods, since undergoing his surgery, bears an uncanny resembelance to actor Will Ferrell. But the awards themselves carried no real major upsets—though there were definitely some tight races.
There were also some tight races in the Bleacher Report ESPY Awards, where you, the B/R community voted on each of the ESPY categories after I reported the nominees and asked for your opinions. Most categories received an overwhelming response, others received few but still meaningful votes.
So without further ado, here are the winners of the official ESPY Awards polls and the winners as voted on by the Bleacher Report community (if different from official winner).

Yeah, gotta have a hats off to Justin Timberlake. I wasn't expecting him to be good, but he was. His writers did a good job as well.
Also loved all of Ferrell bits.
Looks like you guys pretty much corrected all of the beefs I'd have with the fans.
I'd take Nadal over Ginobili though

Yeah, Ginobili won by just 3 votes. I was pretty surprised by that especially after the way Nadal took out Federer.

I thought Justin did a wonderful job! Not only can he sing, but he has comedic talent as well. He did a great job hosting the espy's! I don't watch alot of sports but I enjoyed this!

Sidney Crosby was injured a good part of the season, his teammate Malkin had a better season, but the MVP from Washington should have been the man.

I think Justin did great. That Memphis free throw bit was classic. And he did very well with the brilliance his writers gave him.
Best Male Athlete is really objective. But Tiger beat an entire field of the best golfers in the world with a broken bone in his leg and a torn ACL.

the only beef i had with the espys was the fact that danica patrick was in the race for best female athlete. i can't stand when people put her at the top. she has won 1 race in her career and always struggles in races and her talent level is not the same as some of the other ladies in sports, i mean if they put her in there for never winning and barely coming close they mite as well have put michelle wie in there

She's really marketable. They throw her in there to attract viewers. They know she probably won't win and probably shouldn't.

I guess Red Sox nation showed up on B/R. But obviously NY was well involved in the actual ESPYs.

The have the entire ESPY Awards posted on youtube broken down into multiple parts if you want to watch the whole thing. Justin kept referring to Memphis's inability to make free throws to close out the National Championship. It's worth watching on youtube though... Justin Timberlake was great.

Does anyone know what they're calling the Manning to Tyree catch because I heard only one and that was on Fox Sports and it was The Gotham Grab.

There's been a lot of pretty dumb names given to it: ie. The Helmet Catch.
I personally like The Shawshank Reception ( http://archive.profootballtalk.com/2-1-08through2-10-08.htm )

How about "Best Asian-American athlete: Tiger Woods"? Woods was recently voted the top Asian-American athlete of the 20th century. FYI, Woods' mother is 100% Asian -- mostly Thai but also Chinese and Korean -- and his father was 50% Afro-American, 25% Asian-American, 12.5% American Indian, and 12.5% white. Facially Tiger is drop-dead a Thai. He refers to himself not as Afro-American or Asian-American but as "multiracial." He's said that to call himself an Afro-American would disrespect his beloved mother, while to refer to himself as an Asian-American would disrespect his beloved father. Can't argue with that philosophy.
