NHL Entry Draft: How About Erik Gudbranson Or Cam Fowler?

Bleacher ReportMay 2, 2010

In the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, one thing is for sure; Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin won't make it outside the top two picks.

I think most can agree with that.

What everyone is debating is whether the Oilers will take Taylor or Tyler with the No. 1 overall pick, and it's been picked apart for months.

I expect the Oilers will take Taylor Hall and it will turn out to be a mistake as Seguin will prove to be more productive as an NHL'er, but I've been wrong (many times) before.

But how about who will be picked No. 3 and No. 4?

It's apparent that Cam Fowler, of the Windsor Spitfires, has slipped from being a sure thing at No. 3 to possibly the five spot. I don't think he'll slip to five, but his selection spot at three isn't as solid as it once was.

A lot of scouts and people who get paid to put out "Mock Drafts" are throwing around Erik Gudbranson of the Kingston Frontenacs as the No. 3 pick right now.

This isn't news to most hockey followers, but it should be worth noting that many once argued that Fowler could challenge for the No. 1 against Hall and Seguin. A lot of people even have Brandon Gormley and Brett Connolly now challenging Fowler for his post.

Will he hold on to No. 3? I think so.

Some scouts refer to Fowler as this years' Doughty. Though I think he's far from that, I do believe he's still the best option for the Islanders in this upcoming draft. Though they have Mark Streit as an offensive talent from the back-end, passing up on a prospect like Fowler could prove costly for them down the road.

Fowler's skill with the puck is unrivaled by any other defenseman in the upcoming draft, and that's impossible to teach. Gudbranson has the size advantage, and could be a potential stud for the team that drafts him, but I'm going to stay with Cam for third overall.

My top five looks like this:

1. Hall

2. Seguin

3. Fowler

4. Gudbranson

5. Connolly

Connolly missed major time due to injury this year, but I don't think that should stop the Panthers from taking a shot at him. The Prince George winger has great size to go along with offensive instinct. If Florida passes, they could regret it big time.

Who do you think will round out the top five?
