Solinsky Destroys US 10,000m Record in Palo Alto

EricMay 2, 2010

Story by Eric.

American Chris Solinsky, making his debut at 10.000m, broke the nine-year-old USA national record on Saturday, finishing in 26 minutes 59,60 seconds at the Payton Jordan Invitational held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Solinsky, 11th in the 5.000m at the 2009 IAAF World Championships, made his first ...race at the 25-lap distance a memorable one, blasting past American Galen Rupp in the final 800m—covered in 1.56,4—to demolish Meb Keflezighi's previous mark of 27.13,98—a mark which was set at the 2001 edition of this very meet.

Kenyan Daniel Salel, who also made his debut at this distance, finished second in 27.07,85, followed by countryman Sam Chelenga in third. Chelenga, who set the USA university record last year at the University of California, took more than 20 seconds off of his previous best in establishing a new university standard.

Rupp, who was heavily favoured entering the contest, settled for fourth and a new personal best of 27.10,74—a time which also broke Keflezighi's former record.

Canadian Simon Bairu, who entered the contest with a 27.50,7 best set two years ago on the Stanford track, finished fifth in 27.23,63—a new Canadian national record.

In all, 11 athletes were able to break through the 28-minute standard on the late night contest.

Solinsky, 25, is a 5.000m specialist with a 13.12,24 best and indicated he has no plans of moving up to this distance despite his success at double the distance. Solinsky will be in action at his specialty in Oslo on June 4 and at the Prefontaine Classic on July 3.

Solinsky's mark is the fastest-ever recorded time by a non-African, and trails only the 26.49,02 of Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge (Hengelo, 2007) and country mate Leonard Komon's 26.57,08 (Hengelo, 2008) as the fastest debut times ever recorded.

The fastest 10.000m time ever recorded on United States soil is 26.25,97—a mark set by world 5.000m and 10.000 record-holder Kenenisa Bekele at the 2008 Prefontaine Classic at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
