In recent years, college football has developed into an offensive game. The spread offense has been instituted and defensive players at the collegiate level do not have the speed and talent to stop it.
Many teams from major conferences across the country are averaging upwards of 40 points and nearly 500 yards per game.
Now while there are still some teams that boast a fearsome defense, the fact is, college football is an offensive game and defense is lagging behind, some more so than others.
Here is a list of the top 10 worst defenses in college football for 2010.
The Tulane Green Wave are the first of five Conference USA teams on the list.
Tulane didn't even finish last season as one of the bottom teams in Conference USA defensively. That didn't stop them from finishing in the bottom 20 in the country.
The Green Wave allowed 37 points and 423 yards per game in 2009, and with only four starters back on defense that will certainly continue in 2010.
Couple that with the fact that Tulane had one of the worst scoring offenses last season, another 3-9 campaign is certainly in the cards for the Green Wave.
The Troy Trojans allowed over 424 yards per game in 2009.
Couple that with nearly 30 points per game and only four defensive starters returning, the Trojans are in for another long season on defense.
In 2009, Troy finished at 9-4. The main reason for that was an offense that ranked third in the country.
The defense clearly failed to hold their end of the bargain.
In 2010, look for much of the same results with only seven offensive starters returning, and the defense shows no signs of improving as one of the worst in the country.
The Florida State Seminoles are certainly the biggest name on the list.
In 2009, the Seminoles had a winning season, despite owning one of the worst defenses in college football.
With only four returning starters, things may get worse before they get better for the Seminoles.
In 2009, Florida State allowed nearly 435 yards and 30 points per game.
Despite having a solid offense, their pass defense was one of the worst in the country.
New head coach Jimbo Fisher will certainly have his hands full with this defensive squad in 2010.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers were quite possibly the worst team in college football last season.
After finishing 2009 at 0-12, Western Kentucky can't possibly get any worse.
The only thing keeping the Hilltoppers out of the top spot on this list is their rushing attack, which ranked in the top 40 last season.
Their defense is not on the field nearly as much as other teams on the list.
Despite all of that, Western Kentucky still allowed 40 points per game last season and had the worst passing defense in the nation.
After allowing 478 yards per game in 2009, look for much of the same to continue in 2010.
The Rice Owls are the second of five Conference USA teams on the list.
The Owls finished 2009 with the fourth worst-ranked defense in the country.
Despite returning eight starters from that squad, the Owls still make the list this season.
In 2009, Rice allowed 43 points per game, more than any team in the country. To go along with that, the Owls gave up 464 yards per game.
Playing in such a pass-happy conference, this season will be no different for Rice, who allowed 49 or more points in five games last season.
In 2009, there was no team in the country who was worse defensively than the Washington State Cougars.
So, what is to say they will be much better in 2010.
Last season, Washington State allowed nearly 39 points per game to go along with an abysmal 512 yards. They finished the season 1-11.
Over their 12 games in 2009, the Cougars never held an opponent under 27 points in any single game.
The reason they are not on the bottom of the list in 2010 is the fact that they return eight starters.
But, if those starters play like they did a season ago, look for the Cougars to be at the bottom once again.
The UTEP Miners are a relative unknown in the college football world.
Hailing from Conference USA, UTEP finished last season at 4-8, despite having one of the top 20 offenses in the country.
The reason for the sub-par record was obviously because of the defense.
UTEP allowed 447 yards and nearly 34 points per game last season, including 64 to Texas.
To make matters worse, UTEP only has four returning starters.
So new faces will have to make a name for themselves in the offensive juggernaut that is Conference USA.
The Houston Cougars had quite a season in 2009, finishing the season at 10-4 with the No. 1 offense in the country.
The Cougars averaged over 42 points per game, despite having one of the worst defenses in the nation.
In 2009, Houston allowed 451 yards and over 30 points per game.
These numbers prevented them from the Conference USA Championship.
In 2010, Houston returns about half of that defense, but with the speed the offense plays at, the defense is always on the field.
Last season, the Cougar defense was on the field for more plays than any other team in the country, placing them near the bottom of this list.
The Memphis Tigers out of Conference USA are No. 2 on the list.
The Tigers managed to win two games last season, despite allowing 458 yards per game.
If that wasn't enough, the Tigers allowed nearly 35 points per game.
With only four starters returning, Memphis has little optimism to improve on those numbers.
Playing in what has turned into an offensive conference, the Tigers will have their hands full with high-flying teams like Houston, UTEP and Tulsa.
The fact that Memphis can put a few points on the board is the only thing keeping the Tigers from the top spot on the list.
In 2009, Florida International gave up over 35 points per game.
Known as the cupcake on many teams' schedules, the Golden Panthers allowed 62 points to Florida and 40 to Alabama.
After finishing last season second to last in total defense, FIU is the pick to finish dead last in 2010.
With only five starters returning from a team that allowed 492 yards per game, you shouldn't expect too many things to change.
Couple that with an anemic offense and a difficult non-conference schedule, FIU is my pick as the worst defensive team in the nation.
