Coach Mike Singletary! That has a nice ring to it! Say it with me one more time, “Coach Mike Singletary!’ Well coach you have done it this time. It seems that you are now the father Flanagan of the NFL. In no way do I want anyone to take this as a slight to Big Mike. I am just stating what I see as a fan.
Not that the 49ers have never had problem children on the team before. There was Charles Haley, Terrell Owens, and Lawrence Phillips who caused their own issues, but never in my 38 years of being a fan of this team have so many problem children been on the team at once.
Anthony Davis had problems at Rutgers and was suspended for team violations. They say he has an issue with his weight and desire to play the game. Anthony Davis knows hard feelings.
Mike Iupati is said to have issues with the English language just because he is from Samoa. I would be mad, if I were him, just because of the silly slight. Seriously, his family moved away from everything they had in Samoa to make a life in the United States. He knows hard sacrifices.
Navarro Bowman had off the field events take place at Penn State. He faced the death of his father head on, and remained a part of the Penn St. program. He knows hard losses.
Anthony Dixon lived in his vehicle. He knows hard times. How do you get a DUI at home?
LeGarette Blount’s melt down on national television in the game against Boise St was epic, and reminiscent of an old school fight in the ghetto, where if you fought one person you fought everyone from the kids family. The kid is tough. He might need some anger management, but he is tough. He was suspended for most of the Oregon Ducks 2009 season. He knows hard decisions.
Taylor Mays feels shunned by the NFL and has a grudge to bear. He was slighted by his former USC head Coach Pete Carroll. He was thumbed downed by the fans and NFL pundits. He knows tough disappointments.
The story I see being built here is of guys who can all make an impact in the NFL, but better yet can turn their lives and the opinions of others around.
This group has a theme. The theme is Tough Together . Every pick in this draft has the ability to take a spot on this team, and Blount stands a chance to break on to the roster in the back field or special teams. If these guys are smart they would come into rookie camp and bond as one. They as a group can push each other to greatness, if they leave their egos at the door, and bring their talents to the field.
Mike Singletary you have given these guys hope for the future. I hope they give him their hearts, minds and ability. Not everyone gets a chance to play football at the NFL level.
Not every one gets a second chance to make a difference in their life. Like the kids from the movie "Boys town" these kids can defeat the odds together and make father Flanagan a proud man.
Tough love, tough times, hardships, sacrifices, loses, disappointments and even melt downs are a part of life. Now if this group comes together correctly, they can make it tough on the rest of the NFL, and help this team return to Champions!
