Arsenal Summer Transfer Prospects: Should Wenger Look to Chris Kirkland?

Callum D'SouzaApr 22, 2010

Arsenal began the 2009/2010 campaign with high hopes of finally regaining some silverware. The Gunners have failed to produce any sort of trophies since their FA Cup triumph in 2005.

Sadly, Arsene Wenger and his men were unable to withstand the full season and will ultimately leave this season with very little to show for a gallant effort.

Many felt Arsenal do not boast a sufficient squad capable of putting forward title challenges. One area that is heavily, heavily criticized by not only fans but the footballing world alike is the goalkeeper role.

Critics feel Wenger has neglected the role to the point where the Frenchman now has two keepers who would struggle in the Championship. It was the keeping role which let the Frenchman down the most this campaign and what prematurely ended their title challenges.

Wenger's two main keepers, Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski, caused a host of errors that could be seen as why the talented Arsenal side were declined a serious trophy chance.

Both have a great tendency to make vital errors especially in vital games. It has frustrated Arsenal fans to the point where they demand a new keeper for the 2010/2011.

Naturally Wenger is eyeing up prospects that are of the highest quality but the lowest cost. One that jumps to mind is the ever reliable Wigan shot stopper, Chris Kirkland.

The 27-year-old has had repeated injuries hamper his development and his international progression. But when fully fit, Kirkland is a stunning keeper with great reflexes and best of all, rarely error prone.

Although many would disagree about the prospect of Chris Kirkland becoming Arsenal first choice keeper but under the guidance of Wenger and with a better defence surrounding him, he may just be the answer for Arsenal.
