With each passing week I keep expecting a team or two in the Atlantic-10 to drift off into mediocrity. It hasn’t happened.
It’s time to look at the A-10 as a league that may grab five or six spots come selection Sunday—and deservedly so.
Going into the weekend both Dayton and Richmond were in need of a quality win. Both did just that, beating Xavier and Temple, respectively.
The A-10 now has six teams in the top 45 of the rpi rankings. Not bad for a conference that usually is lucky to get three teams into the tournament.
Let’s take a look at some other teams that have put themselves in position for at-large consideration during the past week and some that didn’t.
Remember, if you have a gripe or just want to talk college basketball leave a message. I would enjoy discussing it with you.
The Illini got the quality win they were in desperate need of, knocking off Michigan St. in Champaign on Saturday. Illinois will have a great opportunity to add another quality win with Wisconsin, Purdue, and Ohio St. up next on the schedule.
Florida bounced back from last weekend’s tough loss at Tennessee to beat Alabama and fellow bubble team Mississippi St. The Gators cannot have a setback against S. Carolina this week.
The Cardinals have started to emerge from the middle of the Big East after a pair of wins this past week over UConn and Rutgers. The Cards go to St. John’s on Thursday before a Sunday showdown with Syracuse.
Other Winners: Dayton, Richmond, Charlotte, Virginia Tech, Marquette, Northwestern, Washington, N. Iowa, UTEP
After dropping a pair of road games against Vanderbilt and Florida, the Bulldogs are in serious at-large trouble. Mississippi St. has now last four of their last five. The good news is that they have three in a row at home, including Ole Miss and Kentucky, so there is time for some quality wins.
The Bearcats dropped games to Notre Dame and Syracuse during the week and now face an uphill battle to get back into the bubble discussion. At 5-5 in the Big East, Saturday’s game at Connecticut is a must win.
A week ago the Cowboys looked to be pretty safe. However, after dropping games to Texas and Texas Tech this week, Oklahoma St. is back on the bubble. Games against Oklahoma and Iowa St. this week are critical considering the rest of their schedule.
Other Losers: San Diego St., UAB, Tulsa,
