Keenan Allen: Is Alabama's Top Recruit Trying To Blackmail Bama?

Larry BurtonJan 28, 2010

Keenan Allen is one of Alabama's top recruit. Allen could easily be any schools top recruit. He is a 6'3" 195 lb. pass-catching machine from Greensboro, North Carolina. Much like Julio Jones, he was named the No. 1 receiver coming out of high school and the No. 1 receiver.

He committed some time ago, but now his older brother, Zach Maynard, a 6'3" 189 lb. quarterback from the University of Buffalo, has decided to drop out of that program and go elsewhere.

There is the problem.

They've been visiting schools as a pair. They have indicated that they would like to play together. The problem is Nick Saban has a limited number of scholarships and I don't think he'd like to waste one on a two star quarterback that would never see the field in that position at Alabama.

Allen could come in like Julio Jones did and have an immediate impact. His brother will not. First of all, he'll have to sit out a year, then what would Alabama do with him?

His stats aren't so bad, but he's just not a top tier QB and may never be one. His stats were that he completed 218 of 379 passes, with 18 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions this season.

Those aren't Nick Saban quarterback numbers at all.

Would little brother want to try and convert to another position? Even if he did, it would be wasting a scholarship because the talent Nick Saban has lined up is miles ahead of where little brother Maynard is now.

Other schools are quick to pick up on this problem. Clemson has offered both a scholarship and so may Cal, a place they're visiting this weekend. Those schools have an extra scholarship to throw away to get the highly sought after Allen.

Now Allen is putting Nick Saban and company in an uncomfortable position. Will they fix up the ugly sister with their brother for Prom Night just to be able to take out the hot sister?

You can bet this is a decision that Saban doesn't like making and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

So for any of you who thought this was going to be a boring offseason, just keep reading and we'll keep you entertained.
