Florida's Urban Meyer Meets the Press: Will There Be a Third Decision Soon?

Larry BurtonDec 27, 2009

Up until the past 48 hours I thought Urban Meyer was a smart man. His professional record would certainly back that up as would his heretofore dealings with the press, his players and employers.

However, the last two days have made millions wonder just what's going on inside that head of his. Sure this is an emotional time for him, but there are millions of dollars at stake; a university and young men's lives that hang on your announcements. And quite frankly, you're looking like a buffoon right now by changing the most important decision of your life so far so quickly.

At today's press conference, you said that you will now be taking "an indefinite" leave of absence but left open exactly what that means.

In the first announcement you said it was your family that caused you to make the decision to walk away; today you said it was your “second family,” the players, that made you decide not to walk away.

It makes you appear like a man who makes decisions based on emotion and who happens to be in front of you at that moment.

So what's next Urban, will you coach every other game? Will you come back after your recovery for treatment of your condition? Or will you now serve as a Coaching Advisor to interim coach and offensive coordinator Steve Adazzio while you're out?

Have you thought any of these actions through? Do you have any idea what this could do to recruiting at your university? I know the coaches of other schools are already calling your commitments, telling them if they want to play for a coach who they know will be there for them, they should come to (fill in the blank).

This was a decision you said you had been considering for years, and yet you change your mind in less that 24 hours? Pardon us, Coach, for wondering what's going on with your decision making process.

All of America is behind you in the recovery of whatever battles you face. All wish you and your family the very best. We all realize that these are difficult decisions for you, your family and your career; but please think them through a little better before your next announcement.

Now is the time to think with your head and not with your heart. Make a decision and then stand by it. Your school deserves that, your team deserves that, and the boys you're recruiting deserve that.

To do less is only doing yourself and your reputation an injustice.
