Jenson Button Runner-Up in 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year
In 2006, Jenson Button was a nominee for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
He had been nominated for winning his first race and having a fantastic finish to the 2006 Formula One season.
However, on the night it was presented, he lost out to "equestrian star" (or horse rider to we normal folks) Zara Phillips.
The award is decided by a public vote and, unfortunately, Jens failed to even make the top three, with the world-champion horse rider followed by Ryder Cup golfer Darren Clarke and gymnast Beth Tweddle in third.
In 2007, Jenson’s future teammate, Lewis Hamilton was runner-up to Welsh boxing superstar Joe Calzaghe; and then last year he was second to Chris Hoy.
Jenson was widely tipped to be this year's runaway winner, but I must admit my money was on boxer David Haye.
When it came to it, though, the 2009 Sports Personality of the Year was Ryan Giggs (Manchester United FC).
Jenson came a very respectable second, which at least puts him level with Lewis for now, whilst third place went to another hotly-tipped contender, Jessica Ennis.
Well, the 2009 show was, I suppose, as award ceremonies go, not too bad.
If I hear the Batman soundtrack again though I will go nuts!
Sure, it’s an awesome tune, but, for Christ's sake, the same tune again and again with pretentious poetic commentary nearly sent me climbing up the walls!
Still, seeing Eddie Jordan drum his way through Fleetwood Mac’s "The Chain" was a fantastic way of getting the Batman tune and that crappy poetry out of my head!
Well done, Giggsy, United may be scum, (come on you Spurs!), but I can’t think of a nicer footballer.
As for Jens, well done on that runner-up spot; I guess you’re gonna need to be a double World Champion to win in 2010!
