Awesome Bill's Son Chase Elliott Wins GAS Championship and Rookie Honors

Chase Elliott, 13-year-old son of "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville," is following in his father's championship footsteps.

The young driver was named the Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS) Champion, as well of Rookie of the Year in that series.

Elliott, with two wins and nine top-ten finishes in nine series starts, finished the season just five points ahead of Casey Roderick, his Bill Elliott Racing teammate.  This is Elliott's first Late Model title.

Unfortunately, Elliott did not get to race his No. 9 Aaron's Dream Machine for the championship as the final GAS race was cancelled.  By virtue of his points standings, however, Elliott was named the champion of the series.

"I'm a little disappointed not to race for the championship in the final race," Elliott said.  "But we had a good competitive season, and I'm thrilled to end up with the championship title."

"This was my rookie season, and to do this well was more than I ever expected, so to also win the Rookie of the Year is awesome."

Well-spoken as his father and mother, Elliott thanked his sponsors and recognized his team for his success this season.  "I can't thank Aaron's enough for all their support," Elliott said.  "I wouldn't be out here doing what I love to do without them on board."

"And thanks to my mom and dad, Ricky Turner, Jim Barfield, and all of the guys on the team," Elliott continued.  "This has been an awesome season."

Elliott will next be racing at the North-South Shootout at Concord Speedway in North Carolina this weekend.  This start will mark the young driver's seventh Super Late Model run and his fourth start in the CRA Super Series.

The 125-lap race will also be Elliott's first trip to that half-mile, tri-oval track.  Speed51.com and RaceTalkRadio.com will be providing live Internet coverage beginning at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday.

Elliott then plans to finish out the racing year at Gresham Motorsports Park in the World Crown Series and then the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway.

"I'm looking forward to wrapping up the year with good runs at the North-South Shootout, World Crown and Snowball Derby," Elliott said.
