What Will TNA's Big Announcements Be?
With Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff joining TNA, and the promise of more developments of a supposedly equal standing to come, it poses the question: how big is TNA aiming?
As a long time WWE fan, I have very little interest in TNA. I occasionally watch individual matches as I am a big fan of AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Kurt Angle, but I have never watched an entire TNA show or PPV.
I pay attention to the major ongoings in TNA, but I have no desire to follow it the way I follow WWE.
By acquiring Hogan and Bischoff, two personalities guaranteed to boost audiences, they have intrigued me.
I am a big fan of neither Hogan or Bischoff, but up until this point I was skeptical of the talent which TNA would be able to attract.
This is not to say their roster is not good, merely that I did not think they would be able to attract talent that has the potential to hurt WWE seriously.
Hogan and Bischoff alone will boost audience figures and draw a lot of attention to TNA, but they will not damage the WWE.
However, the message TNA has sent by acquiring those two individuals is clear: they have finally decided to at least attempt to take on WWE, even if hindering it seriously looks impossible.
TNA have assured us more announcements of a bigger or equal standing are to follow. For me personally, they could be the difference between watching occasional matches to becoming a regular fan.
So much depends on the scale of these announcements. The following are either rumours I have heard, things that could happen, things I would like to see or things that probably will not happen unless TNA have produced a miraculous coup.
Pivotal to TNA becoming a rival to WWE is reviving the Monday Night Wars and from what I have heard, this is a near certainty to happen. Thank God.
At the very least, this should mean WWE will once again be forced to up its game as it did with the Attitude Era from the mediocre programming it currently espouses.
This will immediately give TNA huge exposure, and it is a real must if they consider themselves at all on WWE's level.
Secondly, rumours are rife of Ric Flair's imminent arrival. As much as I would hate to see Naitch return to a ring, this would be a massive coup for TNA, and would truly get under Vince McMahon's skin.
Flair could put off endless talent and is unquestionably still capable in the ring, despite not being a shadow of his former self.
Thirdly, with RVD attending a recent TNA show, it seems possible he will join. This would be another great coup for TNA, as RVD has a loyal fanbase which would watch at least his matches, even if he could not draw huge attendance figures for the entire show.
There is also the potential arrival of Mr. Kennedy and Umaga. While neither were stand-out stars in WWE, both were solid mid-upper carders and would definitely add something to the roster. Whether either would be interested is tough to say.
Beyond this, it is difficult to see what TNA will do. I am hoping they will announce something truly audacious and brilliant which will seriously affect the WWE and force them to re-evaluate their programming.
My reasons for writing this article are basically to instigate debate: what do people think the announcements will be? I'll start the ball rolling with a few I'd like to see, although some are unthinkable.
Austin to TNA: highly unlikely. and Stone Cold can barely wrestle anyway.
Bret Hart to TNA: there is a possibility of this occurring, but again he can barely compete.
Shane O'Mac to TNA: I highly doubt this, but his recent leaving and how confident TNA seem has made me think twice...I would still be absolutely shocked if it happened.
This is a momentous period for TNA. Their recent work has slowly started to win me over, and their roster now looks stronger than ever with names such as Styles, Samoa Joe, Matt Morgan, Sting, Daniels, Hogan, Bischoff, Beer Money Inc., Kevin Nash, Abyss, Bobby Lashley, Angle and Foley amongst others.
Will the arrival of Hogan and Bischoff be the catalyst for the revival of The Monday Night Wars? Only time will tell.
