WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from March 20

Kevin BergeMar 21, 2018

Excitement for the March 20 edition of WWE SmackDown mounted throughout the day following the big news that made Daniel Bryan the biggest winner of the week.

Per WWE.com, the SmackDown general manager was cleared medically for a return to competition after over two years away from the squared circle.

However, SmackDown Live could not just focus on this huge news with WrestleMania 34 on the horizon. New matches had to be announced, and everyone needed to take their opportunity to stand out. Natalya was one performer who succeeded, pinning the current champion Charlotte Flair.

Unfortunately, Tye Dillinger could not find the same success, getting squashed decisively by Baron Corbin after both were announced as entrants in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Worse yet, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens faced their punishment for events last week, losing their jobs with WWE.

The Showcase of the Immortals on April 8 approaches, and it is becoming clearer by the week who has the momentum in these huge matches. The winners further set their path for glory, while the losers may be running out of time to make an impact.

Winner: Daniel Bryan

1 of 4

It has been a long two years for the SmackDown Live general manager. Still the most popular star on the roster, Bryan has been stuck on the sidelines since the April 16, 2015, edition of the show and even officially retired on February 8, 2016, due to recurring concussions over his career.

On Tuesday afternoon, a huge announcement came out from WWE that fans had only dreamed of previously: Bryan had been cleared to compete in a WWE ring again.

Opening SmackDown on Tuesday, he expanded on the announcement, making it clear he would soon be wrestling again although there was no specific date for his return.

The end of the night put a bit of a damper on that moment, with Bryan getting stretchered out after a vicious attack from Zayn and Owens, but in reality this was a huge victory as it showed just how comfortable WWE is getting The Beard back into action.

It is great to hear Bryan will get back in the ring, but it is important he remains careful. His wrestling style since arriving in WWE has grown increasingly reckless, and he has never been great at protecting himself. He will need to reinvent his style to have a long career in WWE.

The "Yes" Man is one of the biggest stars of the modern era, and his return will change WWE. Just on SmackDown alone, the possibilities for matches are endless. From AJ Styles to Shinsuke Nakamura, dream bouts are on the horizon if Bryan stays safe.

Loser: Tye Dillinger

2 of 4

This week, Tye Dillinger fell at the hands of Baron Corbin after it was announced both men will compete in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania.

While Dillinger has not been on television much lately, he did pick up a solid victory on the Fastlane kickoff show.

This loss was not preceded by a competitive contest. Corbin destroyed Dillinger, with The Perfect 10 botching an important moment in the match. The squash was a complete failure for him at a vital time in his career.

Neither of these men is likely to win the Battle Royal, but Corbin at least looks to be a major attraction of the contest as SmackDown's top star in the match other than perhaps Dolph Ziggler if he enters. Dillinger could be a contender, but instead he looks like filler for the match.

Dillinger took a while to get a chance in NXT, but he got massively over before leaving the developmental brand. He should have been a solid addition to SmackDown's midcard division, battling for the United States Championship consistently.

Unfortunately, WWE has ignored him more often than not, vaguely adding him to The Fashion Files lately. With WWE's roster growing more bloated by the month, The Perfect 10 needs to step up and show off any chance he can get if he doesn't want to get released.

Winner: Natalya

3 of 4

The team of Carmella and Natalya continues to pick up steam as Ms. Money in the Bank attempted to cash in on Charlotte mid-match with Natalya. The distraction allowed The Queen of (Black) Harts to roll up the SmackDown women's champion for three.

This likely will not be a win that leads anywhere immediately with Charlotte preparing for a match against Asuka. However, it could be a sign this alliance will play a role in the title scene after WrestleMania. It may even be an early sign Carmella will cash in on April 8.

Natalya and Charlotte have had a great rivalry over the years, but it should not be a major story on SmackDown again any time soon. It is all right, though, if this is about setting up Charlotte vs. Carmella for the future, which is a fresh feud.

Charlotte should not be losing much, if at all, on the Road to WrestleMania especially in preparation for the undefeated Asuka. She is supposed to be the top champion and elite challenger who could take down The Empress of Tomorrow.

Asuka did not appear on SmackDown this week, and that may continue with her still being treated as a Raw Superstar primarily. This win for Natalya makes sure Charlotte has something to do for the next couple weeks, but it wasn't necessary.

Losers: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

4 of 4

Last week, KO and Zayn were on top of the world. They got a singles match at WrestleMania against one another and got to beat down Shane McMahon because he stepped down as commissioner. They likely believed Bryan would side with them and support their actions.

Instead, the GM fired the best friends, making it clear he hoped they would come back eventually with a better perspective. The two freaked out and ruined Bryan's night by assaulting him and leaving him lying, which should make any potential return unlikely.

Obviously, this whole angle is building to KO and Zayn fighting for their careers against two men who will want to hurt them in Bryan and Shane, but this is clearly the lowest point in both these men's WWE careers.

Even just a few weeks ago, this angle was unbearable, but the returning aggression from KO and Zayn coupled with Bryan's return has added new life to this story. It is so much more exciting knowing this angle is now the direct path for the return of one of the best wrestlers in the world.

What will Owens and his Guardian Angel do to get their jobs back? Everyone will just have to tune in next week to see what WWE has in store for a story that has quickly grown far more interesting than it previously was.
