The New York Rangers played the San Jose Sharks tonight and what turned out to be a great start for the Blue shirts, turned into their worst nightmare.  Or was it?

I think this loss came at the right time and against the right team.  This loss gives the Rangers a chance to really look at what they have and what they need!

In the last two games the Rangers had 13 penalties and only allowed two goals. Their pk unit looks very good and their power play scored again tonight making it one of the most fear pp unit in the league as well.

Wade Redden was a -3 in tonight game.  Along with several players on the forth line.  So much for his great defensive playing ability.  A -3  in any game is a disgrace, especially from someone who is supposed to be a defensive defenseman with 12 years in the league.  Why in the world is Redden and Rozsival still playing is just stupidity and after tonight’s game it shows that a change in the defense is most definitely needed.

Redden and Rosey pose no  threat in their own zone or in the offensive zone.  This is ridiculous,  watching these guy play and listening to the announcers pretending that these players are making a difference in any game the Rangers played.  A player falls and loses the puck and Rosey passes it to his teammate and the announcer is like ohhh what a good play by Rozsival, what awareness.  Give me a break already.  You can only sugar coat shit for so long, but it will always be what it is, SHIT!

Here we saw a team that played like a last year team. They had a 2 goal lead and they thought they were too good for the Sharks to catch up and win. So they played sloppy. How many times last year did they have the lead going into the third just to lose the game.

This had to be their wake up call! They cannot ride the coat tails of Marion Gaborik every game.  They cannot get soft as soon as they get a lead.   They cannot give any team 6 and 7 power play chances and expect to win.

The Rangers have four defenseman that have shown their worth every game.   Staal and Girardi  are the defense and Del Zotto and Gilroy are the offense.  As young as they may be, these four have proven them selves. Hell even Giradi has shown weakness, and he just might be a good candidate for trades.  Bottom line defensively is that they need to do something and they need to do it now.  There is no reason to wait, we have seen all that Rosey and Redden have to offer and they are not going to get any better. So why waist time put zing around when they know what needs to be done sooner or later.

In nine games the Rangers have had 57 penalties, that’s right 57!  I think coach Tortorella needs a to have a class called hockey 101. They are lucky they won 7 in a row with that many penalties.

Don’t get me wrong, this team looks great offensively and has shown how good they are on the pk, the pp and for 60 minutes. This is definitely a playoff team.  But, and that is a very HUGE BUT, they need to improve defensively and that does not mean removing Gilroy or Del Zotto.  If not they will never beat teams as solid as the Sharks , Pittsburg and Washington  in 7 games.

So over all this can be a good loss if there is such a thing. It is early in the year, plenty of time to improve,  but in order to do that, they need to get rid of Redden and Rosey to start with ,Girardi as an option.  this is by no means a panic attack for them.  It is a wake up call on what they need to do. They lost to a very good team but they also beat them selves with penalties and bad defense!
