Tom Brady, Patriots Come Back to Stun Steelers After Late Ben Roethlisberger TO

Rob GoldbergDec 17, 2017

The New England Patriots are back in control of the AFC.

After a disappointing Week 14 loss, New England bounced back in Week 15 with a come-from-behind 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the rain Sunday.

A Dion Lewis touchdown with 56 seconds left gave the Patriots the lead, and Duron Harmon sealed the win with an interception in the end zone in the closing seconds.

To make matters worse for Pittsburgh, Antonio Brown left the game early with a calf injury.

Both teams are now 11-3, but the Patriots own the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed. While the Jacksonville Jaguars remain in the hunt at 10-4, New England controls its own destiny for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

There will be plenty of controversy surrounding this game, after Pittsburgh appeared to take the lead with 28 seconds left. Ben Roethlisberger found Jesse James over the middle for what seemed like a 10-yard touchdown, but after review, it was ruled incomplete due to the tight end bobbling the ball while going to ground.

Unsurprisingly, there were strong opinions about the non-catch:

Two plays later, Roethlisberger tried to sneak a fake spike past the Patriots, but it landed in the hands of the opposing team:

This ended a rough night for Pittsburgh, which also saw its star receiver go down after a first-half collision. Brown left the game with a calf bruise, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. X-rays were negative, but he was later taken to the hospital.

The Steelers had survived without him thanks in part to a big day from Le'Veon Bell, who had 165 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. However, the eight-point lead in the fourth quarter wasn't enough to hold back Tom Brady and company.

After cutting the lead down to five with four minutes remaining, the Patriots got the ball back and drove 77 yards on five plays, ending with a touchdown run from Lewis:

Rob Gronkowski was nearly unstoppable for New England, getting open all day long for 168 yards on nine catches. He had 135 in the second half and 69 yards on the final drive of the game.

Brady threw his first interception against the Steelers in more than 12 years, per NFL Research, but was otherwise impressive with 298 passing yards and a score.

He outdueled Roethlisberger, who survived the loss of Brown to throw for 281 yards and two scores, including this impressive catch by Martavis Bryant:

Based on the way these teams have played this year, however, it wouldn't be surprising to see them face each other one more time in the AFC Championship Game.

The Steelers have a good chance to end the year with two wins regardless of who is in the lineup. They go on the road to face the 4-10 Houston Texans in Week 16 before coming home to face the 0-14 Cleveland Browns. New England will end the year with a pair of divisional home games against the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.
