The Mae Young Classic comes a little over a year after the Cruiserweight Classic, which was won by T.J. Perkins. Attempting to build on the momentum of the event, WWE established a cruiserweight division, which has arguably failed to retain that momentum.

The Mae Young Classic is a bit different in that WWE is already reaping the rewards of its increased emphasis on women's wrestling.

The tournament will be a great opportunity for WWE to introduce fans to the next generation of female stars in the company, and it comes at a time when NXT's women division is still struggling with depth from the promotions of Carmella, Bayley, Alexa Bliss, Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Nia Jax to the main roster.

The Mae Young Classic will culminate in a live championship match Sept. 12 at 10 p.m. ET on the WWE Network.
