Safety Will Sunderland Suspended by Oklahoma Indefinitely After Arrest Warrant

Scott PolacekJun 19, 2017

The Oklahoma Sooners will be without a member of their defensive backfield for the indefinite future.

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday safety Will Sunderland was suspended, per Jake Trotter of ESPN.com. Trotter cited Oklahoma County court records and noted the safety had been charged with concealing stolen property.

A warrant was issued for his arrest Thursday.

According to Trotter, Sunderland was thought to be a contender for a starting spot in the 2017 season. He saw limited action in 2016 but did intercept a pass in Oklahoma's rivalry showdown against Texas and tallied 15 total tackles on the campaign.

Any loss in the secondary is a concern for the Sooners considering they were an abysmal 119th in the country in passing yards allowed per game last year.

They play in a pass-happy Big 12 and face Ohio State in the nonconference portion of the schedule and could use Sunderland and the rest of the safeties on the field as they look to improve on last year's lackluster showing.
