Belmont Stakes 2017 Payout: Triple Crown Field Times and Prize-Money Earnings

Steve SilvermanJun 10, 2017

There was no chance for a Triple Crown winner, and the absence of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness champion Cloud Computing meant that none of the competitors in the Belmont Stakes had a chance to win two of the jewels in the sport's top races for three-year-olds.

Some of the luster was off the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes, but a talented 11-horse field meant that this wide-open race had a chance to be thrilling for the crowd of 57,729 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

The race did not disappoint.

Tapwrit came roaring down the stretch, passed leader Irish War Cry and won the third jewel of the Triple Crown with a rousing finish that left his rivals knowing they had been beaten by the best horse in the field.

Tapwrit outlasted Irish War Cry, who finished second, and Patch finished third in the 1 ½-mile Test of Champions.

Tapwrit paid $12.60, $6.50 and $5.00 for his backers, while Irish War Cry, the 5-2 favorite, brought a return of $4.70 and $3.90 for his place and show bettors. Patch's show bettors received $6.50 for their $2 wagers.

The winning 2-7 exacta paid $45.20 and the 2-7-12 trifecta paid $624 to those sharp horse players who held a winning ticket.

Trainer Todd Pletcher picked up his third career victory in the Belmont Stakes. Pletcher liked the way his horse trained for the race, and he thought his horse had sufficient rest after sitting out the Preakness Stakes.

"We felt like with the five weeks in between, and with the way this horse had trained, that he had a legitimate chance," said Pletcher, per the Associated Press (h/t USA Today). "I think that's always an advantage."

Jockey Jose Ortiz won his first Belmont Stakes, and he was sure his horse was in good shape since he had so much power when he turned for home."The distance, I was sure he could handle it," Ortiz said.

Tapwrit won the race with a time of 2:30.02, according to the Daily Racing Form. Tapwrit had an excellent start in the race, and he was right behind Irish War Cry in the early portion.

Irish War Cry ran the first quarter-mile in 23.88, the half-mile in 48.66, three-quarters in 1:14.01 and one mile in 1:38.95. (Equibase has the times for the rest of the field.)

Irish War Cry appeared to be in good shape around the turn for home and at the top of the stretch, but Tapwrit was much stronger during the most decisive part of the race.

"Tapwrit was getting a beautiful trip," Pletcher said. "It was everything we talked about in the paddock before the race. We were hoping he had enough when it came to crunch time. It looked like Irish War Cry still had a little something left, but the last sixteenth, he dug down deep."
