French Open 2017 Results: Thursday Winners, Scores, Stats, Singles Draw Update

Tom SunderlandJun 8, 2017

Unseeded dark horse Jelena Ostapenko will battle world No. 4 Simona Halep in the 2017 French Open final on Saturday after she beat Timea Bacsinszky 7-6(4), 3-4, 6-3 on Thursday to reach a maiden Grand Slam decider.

Attention turned exclusively to the women's competition on Thursday, and Halep thrived under the spotlight as the tournament's third seed defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to progress to her second French Open final.

Earlier on Thursday, Ostapenko extended a fairytale campaign at Roland Garros by defeating Bacsinszky and prolonging what's already been her best performance at a major by some distance.

Swiss star Bacsinszky became the third seeded player to fall by Ostapenko's hand after the 20-year-old already eliminated No. 23 Samantha Stosur and No. 11 Caroline Wozniacki from the running.

Eurosport UK teased Saturday's upcoming finale, pitting unstoppable underdog against irrepressible favourite in France's capital:

Recap

Halep will have another chance at Roland Garros gold on Saturday, when she'll be hoping to right the wrongs of 2014, her first and only visit to the French Open final so far, losing to Maria Sharapova 6–4, 6–7(5), 6–4.

A chance at redemption isn't the only prize up for grabs, however, as Reem Abulleil of Sport360 detailed another gift up for grabs by virtue of incumbent world No. 1 Angelique Kerber's first-round exit in Paris:

Despite failing to record a single ace while Pliskova notched seven, per the IBM Slamtracker, it was the French contender's unforced error count that proved her undoing, conceding a massive 55 to Halep's 14.

Of course, this took the pressure off Halep somewhat, but it's even more incredible to think she makes her second French Open final having only struck 14 winners in the semi, although the last one was decisive:

Ostapenko flipped the script once more in Paris on Thursday as she not only became the first Latvian player ever to reach a Grand Slam final but put an end to several droughts for youngsters in major competitions.

BBC Sport pointed out just how rare an accomplishment it was for the starlet to advance to the finale at Roland Garros after shutting out Bacsinszky:

She followed up a quarter-final comeback win over Wozniacki with a less impressive display against Bacsinszky, considering she committed a higher-than-average 45 unforced errors, per the IBM Slamtracker.

But Ostapenko's mistakes were more fortunately placed, and it was thanks to a decisive third set—in which Bacsinszky defended just one of her five serves—that the Latvian advanced to make history, per ESPN Stats and Info:

Each player conceded their own serve on eight occasions, but the pressure ultimately appeared to tell on Bacsinszky most of all as she crumbled and lost four of the eight break points she faced.

Ostapenko's forehand formed a stable foundation for her path to victory in the end, while Bacsinszky will have to be content with only matching, and not beating, her career-best finish at a Grand Slam.
