Eating Crow Through Week 5: A Charger Fan's Apology To The Broncos

Mark DewdneyOct 12, 2009

Okay. Let me just start by saying that I loathe all things about Denver. I will not eat chocolate-covered bacon on a stick (a Denver-area treat), I will not cheer for the Rockies, and I will never even try to appreciate anything "Bronco" other than John Elway.

How-eeeeverrrr...

*hack* The Broncos have, at least temporarily, made me take a mouthful of crow. You know what it tastes like, and it AIN'T chicken.

By literally plucking a victory out of the air against Cincinnati, then running the table and riding the wave over Cleveland, Oakland, Dallas and the rusty New England Patriots, the 'Cos have managed to make a mincemeat out of at least one of my divisional predictions.

This start's made them at least SOMEWHAT legit - your head coach is STILL a dicklet (he's not even old enough to merit complete "dick" status) but he appears to know what he's doing.

I will mention that beating Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Oakland are not exactly great tests, and that even THOSE games were a lot closer than they should have been.

However (and it's an ENORMOUS "however") to start 5-0 begs reference to a modern saying that I also hate - but "it is what it is".

The Broncos now have a 5-0 next to their name. You can put a hundred asterisks next to that 5-0 and it won't matter - that hot start has now lifted the bar.

Don't start planning the parade just yet, Coloradans - not for either the Rox or the 'Cos - but even if you just play .500 ball the rest of the way, you will probably be back to the playoffs—after all, my Chargers proved just that last year.

We'll see what happens in the NEXT five weeks, where you guys face first my Chargers on MNF, then it's on to Baltimore, Pittsburgh (Washington, nice to have an off-week in there) and back to Invesco in Week 11 to butt heads with the Bolts again.

You could 0-5 through that stretch - and still have a semi-legit shot at the playoffs.

The heat gets turned up this week - and you guys have shown that you've got the heart to do what it takes.

Now we'll see if you can go to the next level.

If you do, at least I've already admitted my preseason predictions were wrong - then I can sit back and wash the crow out of my mouth while everyone else digs in.
