Darryl Sutter, Dean Lombardi Fired by Kings, Luc Robitaille Named New President

Scott PolacekApr 10, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings missed the playoffs this season and wasted little time making significant changes.

On Monday, Elliott Teaford of the Southern California News Group reported the Kings fired general manager Dean Lombardi and head coach Darryl Sutter. Sportsnet's Chris Johnston confirmed the moves.

What's more, they named Luc Robitaille the new president and Rob Blake the new vice president and general manager, per Teaford.

Sutter took over the Kings during the 2011-12 season and led them to the Stanley Cup title. He won the Stanley Cup again two years later after reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2013 and accumulated a 225-147-53 record in 425 games with Los Angeles.

However, the Kings missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons and lost in the first round last year to the San Jose Sharks.

Dan Beckerman, the president and CEO of the Kings' parent company AEG, issued a statement, per Teaford: "This was an extremely difficult decision and was made with an enormous amount of consideration for what we have accomplished in our past. But the present and future of our organization is the highest priority."

Lombardi is the one who hired Sutter during that 2011-12 campaign, and the coach spearheaded a 25-13-11 turnaround down the stretch, which set the stage for Los Angeles' run to the title.

Teaford noted there will be a press conference Tuesday, and Beckerman, Blake and Robitaille will all speak.
