Chase Daniel Reportedly Signs 1-Year Contract to Make Return to Saints Roster

Quarterback Chase Daniel has found a new home. Or, rather, returned to an old one.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, the New Orleans Saints signed Daniel to a one-year contract Wednesday. 

This comes after the Philadelphia Eagles announced they released Daniel following the signing of quarterback Nick Foles.

Daniel is not exactly someone who has racked up head-turning stats at the NFL level. He threw one pass for the Eagles last season, which he completed for 16 yards, and attempted two passes for the Kansas City Chiefs the prior season.

In fact, he has never thrown more than 38 pass attempts in a single year throughout his career with the Eagles, Chiefs and Saints:

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus called Philadelphia's decision to give Daniel a three-year, $21 million contract before the 2016 campaign one of the 10 worst moves of that offseason. Fortunately for Daniel's new team, this contract isn't as lucrative considering his lack of game action in the NFL.

He was a formidable college quarterback and tallied 8,641 passing yards and 69 touchdown throws in his final two seasons for Missouri. While that is the last significant game film to go on, it at least suggests he can serve as a capable backup who can fill in should injury concerns become an issue.

Daniel can also serve as a veteran leader for his new team. Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman praised Daniel for helping quarterback Carson Wentz adapt to the NFL game, per Adam Caplan, Adam Teicher and Tim McManus of ESPN.com.

"Chase's professionalism and intelligence were valuable assets to our quarterback room," Roseman said. "His veteran leadership was incredibly helpful in Carson's development as a rookie and his familiarity with Coach [Doug] Pederson's offense was instrumental in installing our system last season."

His veteran leadership won't be quite as important in New Orleans with Drew Brees leading the way, but he provides injury assurance should the 38-year-old suffer a setback.

There is also a history in place, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted: "They would have liked to have kept him around as the backup to Drew Brees, but the Chiefs made a strong offer and Daniel went there on a three-year deal in 2013."

It's a few years later, but the Saints got Brees their backup in Daniel, who is familiar with the organization.
