Barcelona vs. Manchester United Legends Matches Announced for Charity

Tom SunderlandFeb 28, 2017

Barcelona and Manchester United Legends will collide in two charity matches this year after it was confirmed both clubs will assemble lineups featuring former stars for a pair of fixtures at the Camp Nou and Old Trafford.

The Catalan club confirmed the dates via their official website on Tuesday, with Barcelona hosting the first all-star clash on June 30 before the two teams meet at Old Trafford on September 2. All proceeds from the fixture will be donated to the FC Barcelona Foundation.

The match was originally scheduled to take place last July, but the 2016 European Championship meant it was postponed due to many of those set to take part having "professional duties" around the clash.

As noted in Barcelona's announcement, the June date will represent the second outing for the Barca Legends XI after the team made its debut in a similar charity fixture in Queretaro, Mexico, last April.

Both Barcelona and United boast a glittering cast of alumni who would be eligible for a meeting between two of Europe's most celebrated powerhouses, meaning fans can look forward to a myriad of stars turning out.

That being said, the Telegraph's Richard Martin suggested he's anticipating a somewhat more lethargic affair between two teams of ex-players, regardless of the clubs they might have represented:

No players have been confirmed to feature in the fixture as of yet, although hopes are high that Ronaldinho may turn out for the hosts after taking on an ambassador role for Barcelona earlier in February.

The club released a statement upon confirming the former maestro's official move back into the club's hierarchy, where it was noted Ronaldinho "will also form part of the Legends project."

Some Manchester United legends will have more time to integrate, meanwhile, as ESPN FC's Samuel Marsden confirmed some ex-Red Devils are set to face the PFA Aussie Legends at Perth's nib Stadium in March.

Paul Scholes, Denis Irwin, Dwight Yorke and Mikael Silvestre are just some of those already confirmed to take part in that meeting, and Europeans fans can hope a similarly talented crop of familiar faces line up in Barcelona in June.

This may be just the start of such charity fixtures for Barcelona, too, as the club's statement indicated "further Barca Legends matches are expected to be announced soon."
